the game, with 2:34 to play, gave the ninth-ranked Hofstra Pride a 9-8
come-from-behind victory over the 11th ranked Duke Blue Devils Saturday
afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium. Hofstra, which posted its fifth
consecutive victory, improves to 10-4 on the year. Duke, which dropped its
second straight contest, fell to 8-7.
The Pride rallied back from a 6-3 third quarter deficit to post its sixth win
over the Blue Devils in as many attempts. Treubig's, who scored Hofstra's
overtime winner last Saturday at Sacred Heart, notched his first goal of the
game with 5:43 to play in the fourth quarter in a man-up situation. Taking a
pass from Mike Morrison, Treubig fired a shot that was headed for the far upper
corner of the Duke cage. Blue Devil goalie A.J. Kincel got his stick up but the
ball deflected off his stick and into near side upper corner to tie the game at
8-8. after tying the game, Hofstra held the ball for most of the next three
minutes before freshman middie John Keysor (2 assists) sent a pass across the
box to Treubig, who beat Kincel with a blast from 10 yards out.
It was a game of run at the rainy Shuart Stadium as Duke scored twice to open
the scoring on goals by Matt Rewkowski (2 goals), his 35th of the year, and Dan
Flannery, his ninth of the season, in the first four minutes. But Hofstra,
celebrating its senior day, got unanswered goals from senior long-stick middie
Mike Allain,, freshman John Orsen and senior Joe Kostolansky (2 goals, 1
assist) to take a 3-2 lead with 5:21 to play in the first. Duke sophomore
attackman Matt Monfett would score the next three goals, with one coming in
each of the first second and third quarters, as part of a 4-0 Blue Devil run
with Rewkowski scoring his second of the contest 2:15 into the third for a 6-3
Duke advantage.
But Hofstra went on its own 3-0 run with freshman attackman Ryan Lucas scoring
his ninth of the year on the man-up from Mike Morrison (3 assists) four minutes
later, freshman Chris Unterstein scoring his sixth of the year 21 seconds
later, and senior Ryan O'Donnell notching his sixth of the year from senior
Bryan Walker with 4:45 to play in the third period to tie the game at 6-6. Long
Island native senior middie Kevin Brennan scored the first of his two goals on
the day and the 23rd of the year 1:14 later to give the Blue Devils a 7-6
before Hofstra senior Joe Kostolansky scored his second of the game and 24th of
the year, off a pass from John Keysor, with 51 seconds remaining in the quarter
to knot the score at 7-7. Duke took its last lead of the game 1:59 into the
fourth quarter as Monfett fed Brennan for his 24th of the season and an 8-7
lead setting up Treubig's heroics for the second straight week.
The Pride continue on their drive to qualify for the NCAA Championship as they
begin play in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship Tournament this
Wednesday, April 30th. Hofstra, the second seed in the CAA after a 4-1 regular
season, will host third seed Villanova at Shuart Stadium at 7 p.m. Top seed
Towson (5-0 in the CAA) will host fourth seed Drexel in the other semifinal at
7:30 p.m. The winners will meet for the CAA title and the NCAA Championship
automatic bid that goes with it, at the site of the higher seed on Saturday,
May 3rd.
