fourth quarter to snap an 8-8 tie and the Pride defense held strong in the final minutes as #15 Hofstra
posted a 9-8 victory over the 11th-ranked Fighting Irish of Notre Dame Friday night at Shuart Stadium. The
Pride improved to 3-2 on the year while Notre Dame slipped to 3-3.
Despite a 36-minute delay at the start of the game due to a passing thunderstorm, the Hofstra-Notre Dame
series close game tradition continued as the teams played their sixth one-goal game in the 10 game series.
Hofstra leads the series 6-4. The Irish jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one quarter on two goals by Dan
Berger, his 12th and 13th of the season, and a man-up goal from Matt Howell, his 12th of the year.
Femminella scored his 10th of the year off a pass from Chris Unterstein to tie the game at 1-1 with 5:47 to
play in the period before Berger scored unanswered goals for the 3-1 lead.
The second period was all Hofstra as the Pride scored six times, including two man-up goals, and outshot the
Irish 18-7 in the quarter. Femminella, the senior from Plainview, Long Island, notched his second of the
game 1:04 into the second off a short pass from Mike Morrison (2 assists). Berger notched his hat-trick with
his 14th of the year 48 seconds later, from Howell, to boost the Notre Dame lead to 4-2. But Hofstra scored
three straight goals in 2:37 as Femminella started the run with goals two minutes apart off assists from
Ryan Miller (3 assists). Joe Kostolansky gave Hofstra a 5-4 lead 37 seconds later, with 9:11 to play in the
half, with an unassisted goal.
But Owen Mulford tallied his sixth of the year 38 seconds later off a pass from Patrick Walsh (2 assists) to
knot the score at 5-5. But Femminella scored his career-best fifth and sixth of the game in the last 5:59 to
give the Pride a 7-5 lead at halftime.
Notre Dame came out strong in the second half, scoring three times in the first 8:58 to regain the lead 8-7.
First, Berger scored his fourth of the game 6:59 into the third. Sophomore middie Brian Giordano tallied his
second of the year to tie the game at 7-7 before Berger gave the Irish an 8-7 advantage with his fifth of
the game off a pass from Matt Karweck with 6:P02 left in the quarter. Kostolansky would tie the game for
Hofstra with his second of the game and seventh of the season with 3:20 to play in the third quarter.
Defense was the order for the fourth quarter as the two teams split 22 ground balls and Hofstra turned away
a man-down situation. But Femminella broke the deadlock with 7:22 to play. Freshman middie Chris Unterstein
came around the left side behind the Irish cage and fed Femminella for a 10-yard blast that beat Stewart
Crosland. The Pride defense, behind freshman goalie Matt Southard's three saves in the quarter and 11 in the
contest, thwarted the Notre Dame attack the rest of the way.
Femminella's seven goals were the most by a Hofstra player since Brian Langtry tallied seven against
Hartford in 1998. Hofstra will host #6 Massachusetts on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. while Notre Dame will face
unranked Hartford at Shuart Stadium at Noon. |
