Boyle's goal 52 seconds into the game gave Princeton a lead it would
never relinquish, and the junior All-America went on to have a career
high nine points on three goals and six assists to lead
seventh-ranked Princeton to an 18-5 win No. 12 Hofstra in front of
3,509 at Shuart Stadium.
The win was Princeton's first after tight losses to No. 1 Virginia
and No. 2 Johns Hopkins in the first two weeks of the season. Hofstra
slipped to 2-2.
Princeton is at Syracuse next Saturday (March 22) in a rematch of the
last three NCAA championship games. Princeton and Syracuse have
combined to win 13 of the last 15 NCAA championships.
"It was good to get a win," said Princeton head coach Bill Tierney.
"We really needed one. You could see the effect of our first two
games at the start of this game. We were very cautious in what we
were doing."
Princeton trailed for nearly 101 of the 120 minutes of its first two
games, as the Tigers struggled to try overcome early deficits. This
time, there would be no such worry. Boyle scored the first goal of
the game when he took the ball from behind the net and came in front
to beat Hofstra goalie Matthew Southard, and the Tigers would have
the lead for the remaining 59:08.
Boyle eclipsed his previous career high of eight points, which he had
done twice, with his three goals and nine assists. It was the 11th
time in school history, and first since Jesse Hubbard did so against
Towson in the 1996 NCAA tournament, that a Princeton player had at
least nine points in a game. Hubbard, the only other player in Ivy
League history besides Boyle to be Rookie of the Year as a freshman
and Player of the Year as a sophomore, did it three times.
Hofstra stayed in the game through much of the first half, trading
goals as the score went to 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3 on Ryan Miller's goal off
a perfect feed through the crease from Mike Morrison with 9:32 to go
in the second quarter. Princeton started to break the game open with
three goals in the final 6:22 before intermission, including two from
Jason Doneger, to make it 7-3 at halftime.
"It was a good game for our offense," said Doneger, who finished with
four goals, three of which were assisted by Boyle. "We moved the ball
well, and we shot well. In our first two games, our defense kept us
in it. We owed it to the defense to play a good game ourselves."
Princeton outscored Hofstra 6-1 in the third quarter to make it 13-4
and then went deep down the bench in the fourth quarter. Tierney had
used only 19 players in the first two games, but 40 players played
against Hofstra.
Sean Hartofilis had four goals to give him a team-best eight for the
season and 93 for his career, one away from tying for ninth all-time
at Princeton. He needs seven more to become the seventh player in
school history to reach 100 for his career.
Brad Dumont scored twice for Princeton, while Josh White had two
assists. Mac Byrson, defenseman Ricky Schultz, J.G. Guidera and John
Robinson all scored their first career goals for the Tigers, while
Matt Trevenen also scored.
Princeton outshot Hofstra 44-25. Julian Gould made six saves while
allowing four goals in the first three quarters. Drew Casino won 13
of 21 face-offs.
