to play in the third quarter broke a 5-5 tie and started a 3-0 Tiger
spurt as league-leading Towson won its sixth straight game with a 10-6
Colonial Athletic Association decision over the Hofstra Pride at James
M. Shuart Stadium Saturday night. The Tigers improved to 7-3 overall and
4-0 in the CAA while the Pride fell to 4-7 and 2-2 in conference play.
The Tigers jumped out to 2-0 lead after one period as Tiger midfielder
Alex Fountain scored his seventh and eighth goals of the year. His
first goal came 5:11 into the game on a shot in front of the Pride cage
while his second, coming just 2:38 before the end of the period, was a
bounce shot from the left side that skipped by Hofstra goalie Matt
Southard (13 saves) into the far upper corner of the cage.
The Tigers made it 3-0 just 1:36 into the second quarter as Brian Myers
scored his ninth goal of the season from in front. But the Pride
responded with three straight goals to tie the game at 3-3. First,
junior middie Ryan Vilar (pictured) scored off a pass from Tim Treubig
from 12 yards out for his 12th goal of the year. Then, senior middie Don
Scott, the transfer from Johns Hopkins playing in his last home game at
Shuart Stadium, scored his fifth of the year, off a pass from Vilar,
from the right side of Tiger goalie Reed Sotheron,.Vilar then scored his
second of the game and 13th of the year with 6:56 to play in the half
to tie the game.
But Tiger senior middie Ben DeFelice scored off the face-off six
seconds later to give Towson a 4-3 lead. It was his eighth goal of the
year. Hofstra freshman Athan Ianucci tied the game with 4:16 to play in
the half, taking a cross-field pass from freshman Tom Brewer and making
the dunk for his 10th goal of the year.
Just 4:16 into the second half, junior attackman Kyle Cunningham beat
Hofstra defender Keith Hutchings inside for a one-on-one meeting with
the Hofstra goalie and his ninth goal of the year. Hofstra sophomore
middie John Keysor tied the game at 5-5 six minutes later with a blast
off a pass from Tim Treubig. It was Keysor's 12th goal of the season.
But Towson then got hot. First, Griebe scored his 13th of the year from
in close with 2:56 to play in the third to put the Tigers ahead 6-5. On
the goal, Hofstra was whistled for an unnecessary roughness penalty. The
penalty was costly as 55 seconds later Tiger sophomore Kevin Rutledge
found Drew Pfarr, who fired in his eighth goal of the year from 10 yards
out.
The score remained at 7-5 for most of the fourth quarter until junior
middie Casey Cittadino scored with 1:50 to play in the contest as the
Pride went into a full-field ride. Cittadino's first goal of the year
gave Towson an 8-5 lead. Hofstra was able to get one back as sophomore
Chris Unterstein took a pass from Ianucci and fired home his 14th goal
of the season with 56 seconds to play. But the Tigers scored twice in
the final eight seconds as Pfarr and DeFelice scored man-up goals to
boost the final score to 10-6.
Towson outshot the Pride 40-34 and picked up 35 ground balls to
Hofstra's 33. Towson goalie Reed Sotheron was outstanding in the Tiger
cage, recording 15 saves, including seven in the first among them two
point-blank saves while the Tigers were two men down. Pride goalie Matt
Southard posted 13 saves. Hofstra's winning streak was stopped at two
while the Tigers, with their third straight win over the Pride, brought
the series record a little closer at 18-15 in Hofstra's favor.
The Towson victory clinches the number one seed for the Tigers in the
CAA Tournament on May 5th and 8th. Towson will host Drexel next Saturday
night in its final CAA regular season contest The Pride, who are now
tied for third with Delaware at 2-2, will travel to second place
Villanova (9-2, 3-1) next Saturday evening with second place on the
line. The top two teams during the CAA regular season will host
conference tournament semifinal games on May 5th.
