| | | | Current Record : (9-4) | Current Record : (9-4) | | | | Team Page For 2003 | Team Page For 2003 | | | | | | The Game Story: | HEMPSTEAD, New York - Senior attackmen Jim Femminella and Joe Kostolansky each scored twice and junior defender Brian Zuchelli led a strong defensive charge with eight ground balls as the 9th-ranked Hofstra Pride (9-4, 4-1) posted a 9-5 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Villanova Wildcats (9-4, 2-2) Wednesday night at James. M. Shuart Stadium. The Hofstra victory, the Pride's fourth straight win, clinches the second seed and a home semifinal game for the Pride in the CAA Tournament Championship next Wednesday, April 30th at 7 p.m.
In a defensive first half, Hofstra got on the board with 4:07 to play in the first as Kostolansky scored his 21st of the season off a pass from senior long-stick middie Mike Allain. The Wildcats tied the score right off the ensuing face-off as Marc Creegan fed Matt Lucas to tie the game eight seconds later. The Pride outshot Villanova 16-4 in the first quarter as Wildcat goalie Joseph Canuso stopped five shots.
The Wildcats took a 2-1 lead 2:46 into the second as Richie Kratz (2 goals, 1 assist) scored his ninth of the year from Chris Kramer (1 goal, 1 assist). But Hofstra sophomore middie Mike Morrison would start a 4-0 Hofstra run late in the second and into the third quarter. Morrison started the run with an unassisted goal on a great individual effort with 4:20 left in the half to tie the game at 2-2. Forth-one seconds later Ryan Lucas tallied his seventh goal of the year on the man-up off a feed from Morrison for a 3-2 lead at halftime.
Hofstra scored twice more in the third quarter as freshman John Keysor notched his ninth of the season seven seconds into the period before freshman Ryan Miller tallied his eighth of the year with just 2:30 left in the quarter. But the Wildcats weren't done.
Villanova senior attackman Brian Marks (1 goal, 1 assist) scored his 22nd of the year off a pass from Kratz 1:24 into the final quarter. Less than two minutes later Kratz notched his 10th of the year to close the deficit to 5-4. But Ryan Lucas' unassisted goal with 9:30 to play started another 4-0 Hofstra run as Femminella followed Lucas with back-to-back goals and then Kostolansky ended the run with a man-up goal with 4:36 to play to build a 9-4 advantage. Chris Kramer tallied his second goal of the year for the Wildcats at the final horn for the 9-5 final.
In addition to Feminella and Kostolansky, Hofstra got a goal and an assist from both John Keysor and Morrison and two assists from Mike Allain. The Pride outshot Villanova 38-22. Hofstra will host 11th-ranked Duke this Saturday at Shuart Stadium at Noon.
