(3/8/08)—Four Colgate University players recorded at least three goals as the Raiders cruised to a 15-5 victory over Holy Cross in the Raiders’ Patriot League men’s lacrosse opener. Junior Kevin Colleluori (Bethpage, N.Y.) tied his career-high with six points to lead all scorers.
The Raiders push their win streak to three games and are 3-2 overall and 1-0 in Patriot League play. Holy Cross falls to 3-2 on the season and 0-2 in conference action.
Colleluori tallied four goals and added two assists to lead the Raider attack, while senior Matt Lalli (Princeton Junction, N.J.) had a season-best three goals and two assists. Junior Brandon Corp (Chittenango, N.Y.) registered three goals and an assist for his fifth consecutive game this season with at least four points. Sophomore Ian Murphy (Constantia, N.Y.) tallied his first career hat trick in the victory.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the first quarter as Colgate held a narrow 2-1 advantage after the opening 15 minutes. Murphy opened the game with an unassisted score just 56 seconds into the contest and junior Nick Monastero (Bohemia, N.Y.) broke the 1-1 tie with just under four minutes left in the period with his first goal of the season. Lalli provided the assist on Monastero’s tally.
Leading by just one goal after the first quarter, the Raiders picked up the offensive intensity in the second session. Colgate outscored the Crusaders 5-1 in the quarter, including posting three goals in the final 2:14. Four different players scored during that 5-1 run, including rookie Ben McCabe (Brunswick, Maine) notching his first career goal. Corp had two scores and Colleluori served up two assists during the run.
Holy Cross made it a 7-3 game just 1:31 into the third stanza with a goal from Edison Parzanese, but it was all Colgate in the final 18:39 of the game. Murphy and Monastero hooked up just over a minute later to make it an 8-3 contest, and Colleluori took over with three consecutive goals in a 2:24 span. Senior Jon Freeberg (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) closed out the scoring for Colgate in the third quarter off an assist from freshman Rob Bosco (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.).
The Raiders used a 5-2 edge in goals in the third quarter and an 8-3 advantage in scoring in the second half to secure the 10-goal victory. Parzanese led the Crusaders with two goals and an assist, while Luke Marchaud had two tallies.
Senior Chris Eck (Fairfield, Conn.) was 8-of-17 in faceoffs, while Jim Carroll (Nesconset, N.Y.) was 4-of-6 in restarts. Sophomore Tim Harrington (Lutherville, Md.) played 54 minutes and made eight saves, while Brian Cain (Rocky Point, N.Y.) had one stop in the final six minutes of action.
As good as Colgate’s offense was against the Crusaders, the Raider defense proved to be just as good. Colgate held Holy Cross to just 24 shots for the game, including just four in the second quarter. The Raiders had 37 shots in the game and went 1-for-1 on the extra man.
Holy Cross won the groundball battle 27-24, but was unable to capitalize on any of its three man-up opportunities. Jimmy Harrison and Connor Sweeney both saw action in goal, registering nine and two saves, respectively.
The Raiders return to action on March 11, hosting Vermont at 7 p.m., on Tyler’s Field. |
