senior midfielder Adam Doneger added four goals and sophomore attackman Peter LeSueur
scored three goals and added two assists to lead the top-ranked Johns Hopkins men's
lacrosse team to a 16-7 victory over visiting Albany at Homewood Field Tuesday evening. The
win improves Hopkins' record to 2-0, while the Great Danes fall to 1-1.
The Blue Jays led just 6-4 at the half before taking control with a 5-1 run in the third quarter.
Doneger scored back-to-back goals in a span of just 1:52 and a Benson goal just eight
seconds after Doneger's second tally pushed the lead to 9-4. Doneger and Benson traded
goals with Albany's Luke Smith and Brendan Russell over an eight-minute span bridging
the third and fourth quarters before Hopkins scored five of the game's final six goals.
A pair of Benson goals pushed the lead to 13-6 before Albany's Matt Green answered with
his first goal of the season to make it 13-7 with 7:30 remaining in the fourth quarter. Joe
Benson, the younger brother of Bobby Benson, then sandwiched the first two goals of his
career around a LeSueur tally to account for the final scoring.
Russell scored back-to-back goals in the first eight minutes of the game to give the Danes an
early 2-0 lead. Doneger got the Blue Jays on the board with a goal with 3:56 remaining in the
first quarter and Joe McDermott's first goal of the season just over a minute later tied the
game at 2-2. After Jon Smith gave Albany a 3-2 lead with his fourth goal of the season less
than three minutes into the second quarter, LeSueur ignited a 4-0 Hopkins run with a pair of
goals just 1:11 apart. Sophomore Kyle Harrison and Bobby Benson also scored during the
spree, which was finally snapped by a goal from Albany's Mike Solazzo with 3:47 remaining.
The teams battled evenly for the remainder of the second quarter before Doneger's
third-quarter surge lifted the Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays dominated the stat sheet as they held a 59-21 advantage in shots, a 42-21
advantage in ground balls and won 24-of-27 faceoffs. Harrison won 12-of-13 faceoffs and
grabbed eight ground balls to go along with one goal and one assist, while Lou Braun
corralled 12-of-14 faceoffs and had three ground balls.
Russell's three goals paced the Danes, who also got one goal and one assist from Solazzo and
13 saves from sophomore goalie Kevin Rae.
Johns Hopkins, which is now 17-3 in its last 20 games and 16-1 in its last 17 regular season
games, will next be in action on Saturday when the Blue Jays host Penn at 2:00 pm. Albany
will play Rutgers on Saturday. |
