The 23rd straight April win for the 10th-ranked (STX/USILA) Blue Jays brings their record to 4-3 this season. The Tar Heels dropped their eighth in a row and fall to 2-8.
With the Hopkins lead narrowed to 4-3 late in the second quarter the Blue Jays answered with the first of six goals when a pass from junior Jake Byrne off of a faceoff found sophomore Kevin Huntley, who flipped a behind-the-back shot past Carolina freshman goalkeeper Grant Zimmerman to give the Blue Jays a 5-3 lead with 1:46 remaining in the first half.
In the third, the Blue Jays poured it on as senior Greg Peyser scored the first of his three goals on the afternoon to open up the second half scoring, getting past the Carolina defense and nailing a top-shelf shot to give the Blue Jays a 6-3 advantage. Hopkins was scoreless for the next 7:10 until junior Drew Dabrowski picked up a ground ball on an extra-man opportunity and fired off a pass to Byrne, who deposited a shot in top of the net for a 7-3 lead. Freshman Bryan Christopher's unassisted tally, the second of his two goals, with 3:38 remaining in the period pushed the margin to 8-3. Peyser finished off the period with his second of the day with a shot on the Carolina cage with six seconds remaining that was initially stopped but found its way past the goal line for a six-goal margin entering the fourth.
Peyser completed the hat trick 1:19 into the fourth quarter, as he took a pass from Rabil and delivered a low shot to Zimmerman's right for a 10-3 Hopkins lead. Peyser also tallied an assist on sophomore Michael Donegar's late goal to give him a career-high four points.
The game got off to a fast start, with both teams getting on the board less than 90 seconds in. UNC struck first, as freshman Shane Walterhofer found classmate Bart Wagner, whose top corner shot found the twine for a 1-0 Tar Heel advantage just 57 seconds in. On the ensuing faceoff the Blue Jays got one back as Rabil, who finished the afternoon with three points, picked up a ground ball and streaked down the field, connecting on a deep shot to tie the score.
North Carolina closed the gap to 4-3 in the second quarter, before Hopkins reeled off its decisive run. Only six seconds after Wagner gave Carolina his second goal of the day, Walterhofer went untouched down the field on the ensuing faceoff and scored his first career goal, narrowing the margin to one.
For the Blue Jays, junior Jamison Koesterer was 9-for-13 on faceoff tries while adding six ground balls. Junior goalkeeper Jesse Schwartzman posted 12 saves, including four in the first and fourth quarters. Hopkins was 1-for-2 on EMO.
UNC collected 39 ground balls to the Blue Jays' 36 and converted on 21-of-25 clear opportunities. Zimmerman gave the Tar Heels 11 saves between the pipes.
The win was the 18th all-time for Johns Hopkins against North Carolina and gives them their 49th win in its last 50 April games.
Johns Hopkins is back in action on Monday, April 3, when they host the Mountaineers of Mount St. Mary's for the first time. The Mount brings a 1-6 record to Homewood Field, falling in its last contest 17-7 to fifth-ranked Georgetown on Tuesday, March 28. |
