scored a career-high five goals and added one assist and senior attackman Bobby Benson
(Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) added four goals and two assists as the top-ranked Johns
Hopkins men's lacrosse team knocked off visiting Penn, 14-5 at Homewood Field. The Blue
Jays improve to 3-0, while Penn falls to 1-2.
After the Quakers' Alex Kopicki (Timonium, MD/St. Paul's) opened the scoring with an
unassisted goal just 1:09 into the game, the Blue Jays took control by scoring the next five
goals and nine of the next 10. Back-to-back goals by Benson just over two minutes apart
midway through the first quarter made it 2-1 and a goal by Adam Doneger (Hewlett,
NY/Lynbrook) with 5:13 remaining in the quarter made it 3-1 at the end of one.
Barrie, who assisted on Benson's second goal of the first quarter, pushed the lead to 4-1
with an extra-man goal at the 12:37 mark of the second quarter. Benson made it 5-1 with a
goal 37 seconds later and that would be all the scoring for both teams for the next eight
minutes. Penn's Stephen Brown (Horsham, PA/Germantown Academy) finally broke the
drought with an unassisted goal with 4:18 remaining to trim the deficit to 5-2, but that would
be as close as the Quakers would get.
Barrie scored three straight goals for Hopkins in the final 3:24 of the second quarter,
including one with just five seconds remaining, and then opened the third period with his fifth
and final goal of the game just one minute into the quarter. Penn's Jake Martin (Baltimore,
MD/Friends) sandwiched his first two goals of the season around Doneger and Benson tallies
before Kyle Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Friends) scored with just 1:16 remaining in the third
quarter to make it 12-4 entering the final period. Peter LeSueur (Garden City, NY/Garden
City) and Kevin Boland (Jessup, MD/Gilman) sandwiched goals around a Dave
Andrzewski (Parkton, MD/St. Paul's) goal for Penn to account for the fourth quarter
scoring. Boland's goal came with the extra man.
In addition to Barrie and Benson, Hopkins got two goals from Doneger, one goal and one
assist from Harrison and LeSueur and four assists from junior midfielder Conor Ford
(Timonium, MD/St. Paul's). Senior Rob Scherr (Reisterstown, MD/McDonogh) made
seven saves in goal for the Blue Jays, who held a 43-25 advantage in shots and a 31-18
advantage in ground balls. The Blue Jays also won 20-of-23 faceoffs in the game with
sophomore Lou Braun (Upper Arlington, OH/Upper Arlington) winning 13-of-14. In
addition to his one goal and one assist, Harrison won 7-of-9 faceoffs and had a game-high
eight ground balls.
Penn was led by Martin's two goals, while Mark Gannon (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman)
registered 11 saves in goal for the Quakers.
Johns Hopkins will next be in action next Saturday when the Blue Jays travel to Syracuse to
battle the Orangemen. Penn will host Mt. St. Mary's on Tuesday afternoon in its next game. |
