The Black Knights pulled into a tie for third place in the Patriot League standings with idle Bucknell as a result of their win.
John Walker sparked a second half surge that saw the visitors stretch a 3-2 advantage at the break to 11-3 entering the final quarter. The sophomore attackman scored twice and assisted on two more as Army rippled the Leopards net four times in the first 3 minutes, 12 seconds of the third quarter. The Black Knights continued the barrage with four more tallies before Lafayette (1-8/0-3 Patriot League) momentarily stopped the bleeding with a goal late in the third quarter.
Army (5-2/2-1 PL) scored the first three goals of the game in the first quarter. However, the Leopards battled back with two markers of their own in the second frame. In the end, the hosts' inability to win any faceoffs cost them as the Black Knights wore down Lafayette in the second half.
Switching between Erik Mineo and Tony Vozzolo as he has most of the season, Army head coach Jack Emmer watched his two specialists dominate the "X". The duo won 19 of 22 draws in the contest and were a significant factor in the Black Knights' second half outburst.
Walker tied a season high with six points, scoring three times and assisting on three others. Jake Couch picked up his first career hat trick in support of Walker and Army's potent attack. Jim Wagner and Marko Kostovic each registered two goals and one assist as well. Walker also scooped up a team-high seven ground balls in the game.
Sophomore Mike Obringer scored his first career goal in the win, and senior attackman Doug Bartolotta notched his first tally of the season. Brian Green scored Army's other goal. Matt Luyster and Justin Bokmeyer each posted one assist.
Matt Darak made 11 saves to pick up his fifth win of the season in goal before being relieved by Eddie Clark with 7:57 left in the game. Clark was credited with a save during his stint in the cage. Lafayette's two goalkeepers combined for 15 saves between them. Army outshot the Leopards, 37-25.
The Black Knights step out of Patriot League play Saturday when they return home to Shea Stadium for a 1 p.m. game against Hudson Valley rival Marist. |
