scorer, tied a school record with 11 points on six goals and five assists
to lead the Bison to a 19-5 rout of Lafayette in a Patriot League men's
lacrosse game on Saturday.
Patrick Christensen added five goals and Wes Fetchet had two goals and an
assist to help the Bison improve to 5-5 overall and 3-2 in the Patriot
League. Bucknell remains in a fourth-place tie with Colgate in the
Patriot League standings. The Raiders were 12-7 winners over Holy Cross
on Saturday.
Bucknell dominated Lafayette (1-10, 0-5) from start to finish, racing to
a 6-1 lead after one quarter and outshooting the Leopards 56-23 for the
game. Nine different Bison scored goals, including junior defensive
middie T.J. Wallace, who logged the first of his career.
Bison goalie Matt Baran played the first three quarters of the contest
and finished with six saves. Three of those came in the first period when
Bucknell kept Lafayette off the scoreboard for the game^Òs first 10:19.
By the time Bart Seifert put the Leopards on the board for the first
time, the Bison already had a three-goal lead on scores from Fetchet,
Cara and Christensen.
Cara then rattled off three straight goals to close the first quarter. In
fact, the All-Patriot League attack scored or assisted on seven of
Bucknell^Òs nine first-half goals as the Bison took a 9-3 lead at the
break. Cara, who had already had eight, nine and 10 points in a game
earlier this season, raised his career-high again on Saturday and how has
the four highest single-game point totals in the nation this season. His
final point came on a goal with 2:24 left in the third quarter.
Cara entered the game with 21 goals and 27 assists for a national-best 48
points, became the third Bucknell player to log 11 points in one game,
and the first in 24 years. The last to do it was Matt Fraser against
Lafayette in 1980. Pete von Hoffmann, Bucknell^Òs all-time leading
scorer, also had 11 points in a game against Penn State in 1979.
Cara now has 59 points (27 goals, 32 assists) this season, already a
career-high and the fifth-highest total in Bucknell history. He joined
von Hoffmann as the only Bison players to record 30 or more assists in a
season three times. Already second to von Hoffmann on Bucknell^Òs career
assist chart with 93, Cara, who still has at least three more games
remaining in his junior year, moved up to fourth on the school^Òs
all-time points list with 164. Those assist and point totals are also
third and fifth, respectively, in Patriot League history.
Kirk Klett, Brian Gargan, Nick Lane, Clayton Millice and John Salvesen
also scored for Bucknell, while Craig Fleishman and Patrick O^ÒHearn had
two assists apiece. Mark Davis played the final 15 minutes in goal and
made two saves while allowing just one goal.
Seifert had two goals and an assist to top all Lafayette scorers. The
Leopards used three goalies in the game, with middle man Kevin DeVito
collecting eight of the team^Òs 17 saves.
Bucknell has a critical contest next Friday night against defending
league champion Army. Game time is 7 p.m. at Christy Mathewson-Memorial
Stadium. The ninth-ranked Black Knights are 8-2 overall and 3-1 in the
Patriot League.
