each scored two goals in a nine-goal Loyola second quarter and Loyola held
Brown to 13 shots through the first three quarters as the No. 9 Greyhounds
defeated the Bears, 16-8, in a men's lacrosse game played at Curley Field
Saturday afternoon.
Loyola (5-1) led just 2-1 after one quarter but exploded for nine
second-quarter goals, including four in the final 3:52 of the quarter. Brundage
scored consecutive goals in a 22-second span with less than four minutes
remaining to give the Greyhounds a 9-4 lead, and Matt White and Goettelmann
scored in the final 1:30 to give Loyola an 11-5 lead at halftime.
The Greyhounds then held Brown (2-2) off the scoreboard in the third quarter,
getting goals from Brundage, Goettelmann and Summers early in the quarter to
take an insurmountable 14-5 advantage into the final period.
Sophomore Nino Othman also scored three goals for Loyola, which outshot Brown
42-26 and defeated the Bears for the seventh straight year. The Greyhounds also
had a 40-30 groundball advantage, including a 37-17 advantage in the first
three quarters.
Ryan Fisher added two goals and Matt White and Joey Case each scored one for
the Greyhounds, who scored their most goals since a 17-7 win over Sacred Heart
in March of last season. Case, who usually wears No. 8, wore the No. 9 jersey
in honor of his brother Gerry, a former Loyola lacrosse player who died
tragically of meningitis six years ago today.
Jonathon Thompson scored two goals and added three assists for Brown, which has
lost to its two ranked opponents by a combined score of 34-14. The Bears were
within 3-2 after Thompson's first goal 1:52 into the second quarter and 7-4
after his second goal 4:40 before halftime, but the Greyhounds then scored four
of the next five goals to take a six-goal halftime lead.
Loyola also won 21 of the game's 28 faceoffs, including a 15-for-16 performance
from Ryan Radonis. The Greyhounds also scored a season-high 16 goals despite
getting no extra-man opportunities in the game.
