assists, including one of each in a 4-0 Loyola run that spanned the third and
fourth quarters, as the No. 8 Greyhounds held off third-ranked Duke, 11-9, in a
men's lacrosse game played at Curley Field Saturday afternoon.
Loyola (3-0), which defeated Duke for the third straight year, led 6-5
after a Duke extra-man goal with 13:21 left in the third quarter but scored the
next four goals after that to take control. Jim Fink scored the first of his
team-high three goals to begin the Greyhound run, and Brundage then rolled the
crease for a one-on-one goal with 2:05 left in the third quarter to make the
score 8-5. Fink then scored on an outside shot to give Loyola a 9-5 advantage
after three quarters, and Chris Summers scored 2:21 into the fourth quarter to
give the Greyhounds a five-goal lead.
Duke (2-1) stayed in the game after that, however, scoring three
straight goals in a 3:20 span in the fourth quarter to cut the Greyhound lead
to 10-8. Loyola earned an extra-man situation after Duke's Kevin Cassese scored
with 6:33 left, however, and Joey Case scored to push the Greyhounds ahead by
three goals again.
Cassese led the Blue Devils with two goals and an assist, while Matt
Rewkowski and Terrence Keaney each scored two goals. Duke outshot Loyola,
46-40, including 19-5 in the fourth quarter.
Michael Sullivan added two goals and an assist for Loyola, which
finished 3-for-6 on extra-man opportunities. Duke was 3-for-5 on the extra man
but fell victim to a strong performance by Loyola galie Mark Bloomquist, who
had 11 saves, including four in the third quarter. Duke goalie A.J. Kincel had
10 saves
The Greyhounds, under first-year head coach Bill Dirrigl, have now
started the season 3-0 for the fourth straight season. Loyola plays only one
home game in the next six weeks after today, a conference game against Sacred
Heart.
