early 9-3 lead on Loyola at Geppi-Aikens Field on Saturday afternoon. The
Greyhounds responded with fervent rally that brought them within two goals,
but the Hoyas held on to win 14-10 behind four goals from sophomore Sean
Denihan.
Loyola senior Stephen Brundage registered a career-high four assists while
also scoring a goal for the 'Hounds. It was freshman Andrew Spack, however,
who kept Loyola close in the game's early stages, scoring the first two
Greyhound goals. Junior Matt Monfett scored the third, but after
Goergetown's second three-goal run of the game, the Hoyas led 9-3.
"We got down early and our guys got frazzled," says Loyola Head Coach Bill
Dirrigl. "We tried to do too much by ourselves and that got us in a bigger
hole. I think we recovered well, but the damage was already done."
It was junior Craig Georgalas who finally got Loyola rolling with his
unassisted goal at 6:11 of the second period. Freshman Cory Coffman added
another Loyola goal before the half, taking a pass from Brundage to close
the gap to 9-5.
The Greyhounds maintained the momentum they gained as the first half ended
with freshman Greg Leonard scoring back-to-back goals to start the second
half. Both goals were unassisted and after facing a six-goal deficit in the
first half, Loyola now trailed 9-7.
"It took us a while to figure out that we could play with those guys," says
Leonard in reference to Georgetown. "We're young, and that's no excuse, but
we can't play like freshmen or we're going to get beat."
After the Hoyas answered with a goal from Nick Miaritis, the Greyhounds
converted on their second extra-man opportunity of the day with yet another
freshman scoring. Patrick Kennedy took a pass from Brundage and fired home
Loyola's ninth goal of the day. The Hoyas posted two more goals, including
an empty-netter before Georgalas closed the day with his third goal of the
season.
Leonard, Spack and Georgalas all finished with two goals as the Greyhounds
ended the day 2-for-3 in man-up situations. Georgetown won the groundball
and faceoff battles, picking up 46 groundballs to Loyola's 42. The Hoyas
also won 15-of-26 faceoffs in the win.
Sophomore Michael Fretwell got the start in goal for Loyola, making 13
saves while facing 43 shots. The Greyhounds fall to 3-5 on the year,
Georgetown improves to 7-2. Loyola will play its first and only night game
of the season on Wednesday when the visit UMBC Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. game
with the Retrievers.
