in a 4-0 Loyola run that ended the game and Stephen Brundage added two
goals and two assists as the Loyola men's lacrosse team defeated
Hofstra, 10-4, in a game played at Curley Field Saturday afternoon.
Loyola (3-0), which won its ninth straight game against the Pride, led
just 6-4 after a Joe Kostolansky goal for Hofstra (0-1) with 7:08 left
in the third quarter. But the Greyhounds then got a goal from Chris
Summers with 1:19 left in the quarter to take a 7-4 advantage, and Fink
then scored consecutive goals in a 2:01 span early in the fourth quarter
to give Loyola a 9-4 lead. Brundage ended the scoring with an insurance
goal from eight yards out with 4:32 left in the game.
Kostolansky also added an assist for the Pride, which was playing its
season opener after a game against Villanova last week was postponed due
to poor field conditions. The Pride had just 21 shots and 19 groundballs
compared to 35 shots and 39 groundballs for the Greyhounds.
Loyola, which moved to 3-0 for the fifth straight season, got goals
midway through the first quarter from Summers and Gunnar Goettelmann to
take a 2-0 lead after one quarter. Hofstra's Chris Unterstein got the
Pride within 3-2 with two minutes left in the first half with an
unassisted goal, but Ryan Radonis then won the ensuing faceoff for
Loyola and raced down the field, setting up Brundage for a point-blank
opportunity that made it 4-2 six seconds later. Brundage then fed Matt
White in front with 12 seconds left in the half and White gave Loyola a
5-2 halftime lead.
White and Summers each scored two goals for the Greyhounds, who also
won 12 of the game's 18 faceoffs. The Greyhound defensive unit held the
Pride scoreless for the final 22:08 of the game and held its opponent to
fewer than six goals for the third time in three games this season.
Two goalies split time for the Pride, with Matt Southard playing
two-thirds of the game and recording 12 saves and Steve Izzo recording
five saves in 15 minutes of action. Mark Bloomquist had five saves for
the Greyhounds, who play at Duke next Saturday.
