Loyola scored eight consecutive times after falling behind midway
through the first quarter as the Greyhounds improved to 2-0 with a 10-3
win over Mount Saint Mary's in a men's lacrosse game played at Curley
Field Tuesday afternoon.
The Greyhounds (2-0), who also got two goals each from Parker Adams and
Joey Case and three assists from Gunnar Goettelmann, held the
Mountaineers (0-2) off the scoreboard from midway through the first
quarter until the 6:57 mark of the third quarter on the way to taking an
8-1 lead. Summers had all three of his goals in that eight-goal Loyola
run, while Goettelmann had all three of his assists in that time.
Ian Cassidy, Matt Warner and Dan Hatton each scored goals for the
Mount, which was meeting Loyola for the first time since the 1981
season. Mount goalie David Lambour had a strong game, stopping 17 of
Loyola's 32 shots. The Greyhounds outshot the Mount, 32-19.
Cassidy scored with 7:49 to go in the first quarter to give the Mount
its only lead, 1-0, but Adams scored 40 seconds later for Loyola to tie
the game. Summers scored an extra-man goal, one of four man-up goals for
Loyola on the day, with 4:14 left in the first quarter to give the
Greyhounds a 2-1 lead after one.
The Greyhounds then got goals from Rayland Baxter, Case and Summers to
take a 5-1 halftime lead. Summers, Stephen Brundage and Adams then
scored early goals in the third quarter to give Loyola an 8-1
advantage.
Loyola had 45 groundballs to just 23 for the Mount and held the Mount
to just one extra-man goal in six opportunities. The Greyhounds allowed
their opponent single digits in goals for the 13th time in 15 games
under second-year head coach Bill Dirrigl.
