Pennsylvania scored the final three goals and handed Loyola a 7-5 loss at Diane
Geppi-Aikens Field. The two teams split the faceoff battle and each goalie
posted 13 saves, but the Quakers earned the win with solid defense down the
stretch.
?Our effort was there today,? says Loyola Head Coach Bill Dirrigl. ?We hustled
after loose balls and our players really cared. For one reason or another, our
shots wouldn?t fall and that?s been the story all year.?
For the first time all season, the Greyhounds were shutout in the first quarter
as Penn took an early 3-0 lead. The ?Hounds responded with a season-high four
second-quarter goals, beginning with Matt Monfett?s strike only 38 seconds into
the stanza. Nino Othman followed with his second goal of the season and Pat
Shek converted on Loyola?s only extra-man opportunity of the day to tie the
score at 3-3.
With 5:34 remaining in the second quarter, senior Stephen Brundage gave Loyola
its first lead with his team-leading 16th goal of the year. Penn answered with
Patrick Connelly?s goal and the two teams were tied at halftime.
The Greyhounds took back the lead as the third quarter started with freshman
Cory Coffman firing a goal past Penn?s Ryan Kelly. The Quakers came back 30
seconds later to tied the game, and after taking the faceoff, Ethan Haire found
and open Luke Dixson and Penn led 6-5. The Quakers tallied the game?s only
fourth quarter goal and in the process improve to 7-5 on the year while Loyola
drops to 3-7.
Sophomore Michael Fretwell, who started his fourth straight game in goal, made
13 saves for Loyola. Bernie Cannon, Michael Graham and Greg Leonard all had
four groundballs while Jeff Russell won 4-of-5 faceoffs.
?We had a very tough week,? says Dirrigl. ?We came out here on two days
preparation and gave it all we had. You have give Penn a lot of credit, they?re
a good team.?
The Greyhounds, who held Penn to an 0-for-6 day in extra-man opportunities,
face another Ivy League opponent next Saturday when Yale comes to town. Game
time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
