White and scored his third goal of the game with 38 seconds gone in the second
overtime, giving No. 2 Princeton a thrilling 6-5 victory over No. 19 Loyola in
a men's lacrosse game played at Curley Field Tuesday afternoon.
The Greyhounds (6-4), who won 11 of the game's 16 faceoffs and held the ball
for long stretches to shorten the game, appeared to have control of the second
overtime faceoff but were called for illegal procedure. The Tigers (9-2) then
put the ball in the hands of White behind the net, and he found Doneger
streaking toward the goal for the game winner with 3:22 on the clock.
Princeton had a one-minute man advantage early in the first overtime after
Loyola's Grant Halford was called for an illegal body check, but the Tigers
never got a shot off during that man-up situation. Matt Trevenen had
Princeton's best chance during the first overtime, but his close shot was wide.
Loyola had an opportunity in the final minute of the first overtime, but
Stephen Brundage's shot from 10 yards out was high.
Loyola (6-5) trailed 5-4 after Ryan Boyle scored for Princeton (9-2) with 10:55
left in the game but tied the game with 4:55 left when Joey Case picked up a
loose ball behind the net and scored past Tiger goalie Julian Gould
The Greyhounds trailed 3-0 at halftime but scored four goals in a 6:09 span
midway through the third quarter to take a 4-3 lead. Gunnar Goettelmann scored
on a one-on-one move to get Loyola on the board 4:02 into the quarter, and C.J.
Sinisgalli then scored 37 seconds later on an outside shot from the right wing.
Loyola tied the game with 5:47 left in the quarter on a Ryan Fisher goal and
went ahead just 58 seconds later when Chris Summers took a feed from Matt White
and sent a rocket past Gould from the left wing.
Princeton tied the game at 4-4 with 23 seconds left in the third quarter when
Hartofilis scored his 32nd goal of the season. The Tigers won their ninth
straight game overall after opening the season with home losses to Johns
Hopkins and Virginia.
Loyola goalie Mark Bloomquist had a strong game, stopping a season-high 12
shots overall, including five in the third quarter as the Greyhounds made their
comeback. He stopped a point-blank shot from Boyle in the quarter during that
run and also stoned Sean Hartofolis late in the quarter.
Five different players scored for Loyola, which fell to 1-4 all-time against
the Tigers. The Greyhounds
