BALTIMORE (April 16)--Jim Fink had two goals and an assist, including one each
in a 7-1 Loyola run that spanned the second and third quarters, and Ryan
Radonis won 19 of 22 faceoff attempts to lead the No. 16 Greyhounds to a 12-10
win over Sacred Heart in a men's lacrosse game played at Curley Field Wednesday
afternoon.
Loyola (6-4), which broke a three-game losing streak, trailed 2-1 after the
first quarter but then scored three times in a 1:12 span midway through the
second quarter to take a 4-2 lead on a Stephen Brundage goal with 5:31 left in
the half. After Ben Giamichael scored for Sacred Heart (5-6) less than a minute
after Brundage's goal, the Greyhounds got goals from Gunnar Goettelmann and
Grant Halford in the final two minutes of the half to take a 6-3 halftime lead.
The Greyhounds then extended their lead to five goals early in the second half,
getting goals from Nino Othman and Chris Summers in the first five minutes of
the half to take an 8-3 lead.
Giamichael led the Pioneers with three goals, while Stephen Grabow had two
goals and Erick Perez had a goal and four assists. Sacred Heart trailed 12-7
after Joey Case scored for Loyola with 6:29 left but scored the final three
goals of the game, including goals from James Delmonico and Giamichael in the
final 42 seconds.
Goettelmann, Brundage and Othman each added two goals for Loyola, which
defeated the Pioneers for the second straight year. Loyola outshot Sacred Heart
39-29, including 18-11 in the first half, and also had 39 groundballs to just
26 for the Pioneers.
Fink scored the game's first goal 1:07 into the first quarter to give the
Greyhounds the lead, but Giamichael and Perez scored for Sacred Heart to give
the Pioneers a 2-1 lead after one. The Pioneers briefly got back within one,
4-3, on Giamichael's goal with 4:36 left in the first half, but never got any
closer.
Radonis dominated the faceoff "X" for Loyola, winning the first 16 faceoffs of
the game through the first two-and-a-half quarters. The senior, who ranks
second nationally in faceoff percentage and first in groundballs per game, had
a game-high 12 groundballs.
Sacred Heart goalie Thomas Hind had 14 saves to help keep the Pioneers in the
game. The Pioneers also converted on two of their four extra-man opportunities.
