Cassalia and Jordan Rabidou each added two as Loyola rolled to a 12-8 win over
Yale on Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds use a seven-goal second quarter to
get the win at Geppi-Aikens Field.
?It felt great to finally play together,? says Brundage. ?If you look at the
statistics, everybody contributed. The defense, the midfield, the offense ?
everyone played well and that?s what you need to do to win.?
For the second week in a row, the Greyhounds were shutout in the first quarter.
Yale got two goals from Ned Britt and led 2-0 at the first intermission. Loyola
responded in a big way, posting a season-high goal total for any quarter with
five ?Hounds scoring seven goals.
Freshman Greg Leonard struck first when he took a pass from Dan Bauers and
fired home Loyola?s first score at 12:48 of the quarter. Brundage notched
back-to-back goals and the Greyhounds led 3-2. The Bulldogs tied the game at
3-3, but a 28-second scoring frenzy would put the ?Hounds up for good.
Junior Chris Einhorn gave Loyola a 4-3 lead at 3:32 of the second quarter.
Junior Matt Monfett put home a transition goal with a nice lead from Rabidou at
3:20 before Rabidou found a streaking Cassalia for a 6-3 Greyhound lead at 3:04
of the quarter.
?Our guys had fun today,? says Loyola Head Coach Bill Dirrigl. ?It?s been a
tough season and they?ve really hung in there. I?m proud of them for that.?
Still in the second quarter, Yale?s Seth Goldberg scored at 1:27 to bring the
Elis within two goals, but Cassalia answered before the half to give Loyola a
7-4 lead at the midway point of the game.
The two teams exchanged goals the rest of the way with Yale unable to get any
closer than two goals. Freshman Dan Bauers scored his first career goal, taking
a pass from classmate Cory Coffman to start the fourth quarter. Bauers,
Monfett, Leonard, Einhorn and freshman Joe Landry all added one goal for the
?Hounds.
Loyola took 17 second-quarter shots and ended the game with 40 shots compared
to 29 for Yale. Sophomore Michael Fretwell earned his first win in goal,
registering nine saves on the day. Cassalia led the team with six groundballs
while seniors Brundage and Bernie Cannon each tallied five.
?This win is nice, but it doesn?t get the monkey off our backs,? says Brundage.
?It?s been a disappointing year, but two wins to close out, especially one
against Johns Hopkins next Saturday, would make up for it in a big way.?
Loyola, 4-7 overall, closes out the regular season with No. 1 Johns Hopkins at
Geppi-Aikens Field next Saturday. That game will be televised by WMAR-TV2 and
can be heard live on WNST AM 1570. Faceoff is slated for 1:08 p.m.
