to erase, including six straight to open the last frame, to break open a close
game and defeat Army, 16-12, Saturday night at Byrd Stadium. The Terps advance
to face Princeton next Saturday in Charlottesville, Va. The time of that game
will be announced at the beginning of the week.
Senior Drew Virk helped key the Maryland victory winning a career-high 13-19
face-offs for the Terps, including nine straight at one point.
Tied 7-7 heading into the fourth quarter, the Terps rattled off seven straight
goals to break the game open. During that run, Virk won six straight face-offs
to help the Terps pull away.
Joe Walters led the Terps with six points on three goals and three assists. For
Walters it was his 12 hat trick in 15 games this season and fifth game with six
or more points. Bill McGlone added in two goals and two assists for Maryland.
Brothers Brendan Healy and Ian Healy each had two goals.
Senior captain Paul Gillette also posted his first-career multi-goal game in
the win.
Army was led by its high-scoring attack as Jim Wagner netted five goals to
raise his nation-leading total to 46. John Walker scored four goals in the
defeat as well.
Maryland scoring run of seven consecutive goals featured seven different goal
scorers over a six-minute span with goals coming frm Brendan Healy, Dave Matz,
Walters, Mike Brown, Gillette, Bill McGlone and Ian Healy to make it 14-7 with
6:10 left in regulation.
Wagner finally stopped the bleeding as he beat Maryland goalie Tim McGinnis
with 5:50 left in the fourth quarter. Gillette and McGlone then added their
second goals of the game sandwiched around Walker's third goal of the game.
Army rattled off the final three goals of the game with Walker getting his
fourth and Wagner tallying his fourth and fifth of the game for the 16-12
final.
After a scoreless five minutes to open the game, Walters gave the Terps the
early lead with a pair of goals just eight seconds apart at 9:49 and 9:41.
Army's Wagner and Walker scored three of the game's next five goals to make it
4-3 at the end of the first quarter.
The Cadets continued their run with the first two goals of the second quarter
to take their only lead of the game at 5-4 with Marko Kostovic and Walker
scoring back-to-back goals midway through the second quarter.
Maryland tied the game at 5-5 as Brendan Healy notched his first of the game
and J.R. Bordley gave the Terps a 6-5 lead off an assist from Walters heading
into halftime.
Army's Justin Bokemeyer scored two of the three goals in the third quarter to
keep the game tied at the end of the third settting the stage for the frantic
fourth quarter featuring 14 goals -- after 14 were scored in the first three
quarters total.
Maryland freshman Ryan Clarke scored his first career goal on a long shot from
near midfield for the Terps' only goal in the third quarter which gave Maryland
a brief 7-6 lead.
The Terps finished the game with a season-high 57 shots including a quarter
season-high 21 in the fourth period. Maryland won the groundball war, taking 44
to 30. Led by Virk, the Terps also had the better of it at the face-off X
winning 17-of-32.
Army's Matt Darak made 20 saves while McGinnis made 12 for the Terps. Darak is
now Army's all-time leader in career saves with 227.
For Maryland, Joe Walters now has 66 points this season, to rank tied for the
10th-best single-season and his 44 goals is tied for eighth best in a season at
Maryland.
