early to cruise to a 14-3 victory over Hartford on Friday afternoon at Garber Field. The Minutemen have won
three straight games by double-digits heading into Sunday's contest at nationally-ranked Hofstra.
UMass bolted out of the gates early, taking a 6-0 lead just three minutes into the second quarter. Six different
players tallied goals in the first 18 minutes. Gene Tundo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) notched the game's first goal at
the 11:36 mark. UMass increased the lead to 3-0 on goals just 1:17 apart by Neil Lundberg (Bloomfield
Hills, Mich.) and Chris Doyle (Putnam Valley, N.Y.). The Minutemen led 4-0 after one quarter.
Ryan Connolly (North Andover, Mass.) and Sean Morris (Marshfield, Mass.) pushed the lead to 6-0 with
netters at the 14:00 and 12:45 marks, respectively. After Hartford trimmed the lead to 6-2 late in the stanza,
Kevin Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.) gave UMass a 7-2 halftime advantage with his second goal of the game at the
1:18 mark.
The Minutemen then outscored the Hawks, 3-0, in the third period, with all three goals coming in the first
five minutes. Chris Fiore (Freeport, N.Y.), Jeff Zywicki (Napean, Ontario) and Doyle all notched goals to give
UMass a 10-2 cushion heading into the final period.
UMass continued the offensive attack, outscoring Hartford, 4-1, in the final 15 minutes. Zywicki, Fiore,
Morris and Connolly were all credited with goals.
The Minutemen outshot the Hawks, 36-31, and were 32-of-35 on clears, compared to Hartford's
17-of-26. Bill Schell (Mahopac, N.Y.) made 10 saves in the cage for the Minutemen.
Zywicki paced the Minutemen with four points (2 g, 2 a), while Chris Fiore and Kevin Glenz (Merrick, N.Y.)
contributed three assists. Fiore had two goals and an assist and Glenz had a career-best three assists.
The Minutemen will battle Hofstra on Sunday, March 23, at Hempstead, N.Y., at 2:30 p.m. It will be the first
road game of the season for the Minutemen. |
