The win moves UMass' record to 4-4 overall, while Hofstra drops to 2-5 overall.
UMass wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard, as Chris Doyle (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) bounced in a goal just 52 seconds into the game, giving the Minutemen a lead they would never relinquish. Ryan Connolly (North Andover, Mass.) gave UMass a 2-0 lead with 6:55 to play in the first quarter with his only goal of the contest and ninth of the season. Hofstra's Ryan Lucas cut into the lead with just under three minutes to play in the period. It marked the first goal the UMass defense had given up in a 45-minute, 51-second span, dating back to the Sacred Heart game.
Matt Tundo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Tim Truebig traded goals in the second period, and the Minutemen went into the halftime break with a 3-2 advantage.
The Minutemen then broke the game open in the third period, notching three goals in the first 10 minutes. Neil Lundberg (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), Doyle and Tony Ventiquattro (Deferiet, N.Y.) netted goals to spot UMass a 6-2 advanteage with 5:41 to play in the third quarter. Hofstra's Don Scott scored with five minutes left in the third period to cut the lead to 6-3, but that would be the final goal either team would score as the two goalies took charge. UMass' Bill Schell (Mahopac, N.Y.) made 13 saves, including four in the third period, to keep the Pride at bay. His counterpart, Matt Southard, stopped 16 shots for Hofstra. UMass outshot Hofstra, 34-33, and won 8-of-13 face-offs. The Minutemen also held Hofstra to convert on only 20-of-26 clears.
UMass will take to the road for its next contest, traveling to ECAC rival Penn State. Face-off is slated for noon at Jeffery Field in University Park, Pa., next Saturday, April 3. |
