Stony Brook (0-1), 17-7, this afternoon at Richard F. Garber Field. Senior Kevin Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.)
led the Minuteman attack with seven goals and three assists, while senior Chris Fiore (Freeport, N.Y.) added
four goals and junior Jeff Zywicki (Nepean, Ontario) had two goals and three assists.
Massachusetts scored four goals not even halfway into the first period to take command of the game. Leveille
got the Minutemen on the board 2:47 into the contest and then a goal by Zywicki less than two minutes later
put them up 2-0. Leveille scored the next two goals to give the Minutemen a 4-0 lead at the 8:35 mark.
After Jason Cappadoro got the Seawolves on the board at the 7:43 mark of the first quarter, Kevin Shea
recorded an unassisted tally at the 3:09 mark to bring Stony Brook within two scores at 4-2. Zywicki tallied
his second goal of the game with 1:53 left in the opening quarter to give UMass a 5-2 lead after one.
Leveille scored two more goals 1:04 apart in the second quarter to put the Minutemen up 7-2. After another
Cappadoro goal for the Seawolves at 9:10, Fiore gave UMass its five-goal lead back four minutes later with
an extra-man opportunity tally. Shea tallied his second of the game with 14 seconds left to give Stony
Brook some momentum heading into halftime, down just 8-4.
Cappadoro completed his hat trick at the 14:12 mark to cut UMass' lead to 8-6, but the Minutemen scored
three times in the next three minutes to end any upset hopes for the Seawolves. Sophomore Gene Tundo
(Orchard Park, N.Y.) scored the first one on an EMO, while Fiore and sophomore Chris Doyle (Putnam
Valley, N.Y.) put UMass up 11-6. After a score by Sean Quinlan at the 5:48 mark, the Minutemen scored three
more times in the third quarter to put it away.
Freshman Tony Ventiquattro (Deferiet, N.Y.) scored his first career goal at the 6:12 mark of the fourth quarter
to complete the scoring for UMass on the day. Cappadoro led Stony Brook with three goals and one assist,
while Shea had two goals. George LaFlare had a goal and an assist for two points on the day.
The Minutemen outshot the Seawolves, 35-26 and scooped up 14 more ground balls (35-21).
Sophomore goalkeeper Bill Schell (Mahopac, N.Y.) made nine saves for UMass, while Errol Wilson and
Jeffrey Slater combined to make five for the visitors.
Massachusetts will host ECAC foe Navy in a 12:00 p.m. game at Garber Field on Saturday, March 8. |
