lead No. 15 Navy past Bucknell 11-5 in a Patriot League men^Òs lacrosse
game Saturday at Navy Marine Corps Stadium. Wes Fetchet scored two goals
and Chris Cara had three assists to lead the Bison, who fell to 2-2 on
the season and 0-1 in league play.
In the first game between the two teams as Patriot League rivals ^Ö Navy
joined the conference in men^Òs lax this season ^Ö the Midshipmen (3-1,
2-0) broke open a one-goal game in the third quarter by scoring six of
the game^Òs final seven goals.
The game was scoreless for the first 10:42 until Bucknell^Òs Patrick
Christensen broke the ice off an assist from Cara, who was the nation^Òs
leading scorer with 22 points entering the game. Joe Bossi, who had three
goals on the day, tied it 65 seconds later and Dingman put Navy ahead for
the first time with 2:28 left in the opening period. But with Jared
Bosanko off on an unnecessary roughness call, John Salvesen scored off a
Craig Fleishman pass to tie it at 2-all after the first quarter.
Dingman scored twice and assisted on another to spark a 3-0 Navy run to
start the second quarter, but Bison freshman Brian Gargan finished a Cara
feed with 2:35 on the clock to pull Bucknell within 5-3 at the half.
Cara passed to Fetchet for a goal just 38 seconds into the second half to
make it a 5-4 game, but the Bison would score just once more the rest of
the way.
Dingman and Billy Looney scored less than three minutes apart to give the
Mids some breathing room at 7-4, and after Fetchet scored a man-up goal
to make it 7-5 with 4:12 left in the third, Graham Gill answered with an
EMO marker off a Dingman pass. Navy outscored Bucknell 3-0 in the fourth
quarter, with Looney, Bossi and Ben Horn providing the scoring.
Matt Baran finished with 14 saves for the Bison, who were outshot 36-22,
including 13-2 in the final period. Navy held a 44-33 edge in ground
balls, while both teams each won 10 faceoffs.
Bucknell went 2-for-2 in man-up situations and is now 12-for-22 on the
season.
Matt Russell made eight saves for Navy, five coming in the first quarter.
The Bison will host second-ranked Maryland on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at
Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
