two quarters en route to a 15-5 victory over the Raiders in the
semifinals of the Patriot League Lacrosse Tournament Friday afternoon at
Navy-Marine Corps Field.
"Number one, it's good to win," said 2004 Patriot League Coach
of the Year Richie Meade. "I thought it might be tough emotionally
coming off last weekend's loss against Hopkins. It's also been a tough
week school-wise with our kids preparing for final exams.
"I'm particularly pleased with how well William Wallace and
Tommy Wallin played on face-offs. Defensively, we played very well. I
don't think Matt (Russell) was ready for that first shot they took. It
was pretty far out. After that, I thought we settled down and were a
pretty stingy defense."
Navy jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind a pair of goals by Looney
brothers Billy and Steve (Silver Spring, Md.). Named the Patriot League
Freshman of the year earlier in the week, Billy scored the game's first
goal on an unassisted score at the 12:39 mark. Older brother Steve gave
Navy a two-goal lead, scoring just 15 seconds after his brother.
Colgate tied the game up in similar fashion, scoring just 10
seconds apart at the 10:32 and 10:22 marks in the first stanza. The
Raiders, however, endured a drought that held the Raiders scoreless over
40 minutes before junior attack Eddie Brennan produced his eighth goal
of the year on a Reid Diamond assist at the 14:24 mark in the fourth
quarter.
Sandwiched in between Colgate's second and third goals were
10-straight goals by the Midshipmen, including three each by seniors Joe
Bossi (Skaneateles, N.Y.) and Ben Bailey (Memphis, Tenn.).
The fourth quarter saw each team score three goals, but it
wasn't enough for the Raiders.
"We improved a lot since the last time we played Navy, but they
are good," said Colgate head coach Jim Nagle. "I felt like we played
them pretty even in the first half, but the third quarter they
dominated, especially in face-offs."
Navy won the face-off battle despite starting specialist Chris
Pieczonka (Hamburg, N.Y.) being out with injury. Freshman William
Wallace (Bloomfield Village, Mich.) stepped in nicely, earning 14 wins
in his 18 draws, while fellow rookie Tommy Wallin (Mountain Lakes, N.J.)
was 1 for 5.
Defensively, Navy keeper Matt Russell (Madison, Conn.) produced
12 saves, including nine in the second half. Raiders' cage minder
Andrew Jarolimek posted 14 saves.
Bossi led Navy in scoring with four goals, while Bailey turned
in an assist to accompany his hat trick.
Navy will face second-seeded Hobart in the Patriot League
Championship Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Statesmen rallied on an 8-5
second half scoring advantage defeat No. 3 seed Bucknell, 10-9, in the
second Patriot League semifinal.
