seconds into
overtime gave unbeaten Georgetown (6-0, 3-0 ECAC) a 4-3 victory over Navy (4-4,
0-3 ECAC) in
lacrosse action on a miserably wet Sunday afternoon at Rip Miller Field in
Annapolis.
"I'm very disappointed ... very disappointed that we didn't win the
game," said Navy
head coach Richie Meade. "Obviously, we challenged the team and they responded
to it. I felt
like we made a few mistakes down the stretch that hurt us. I told our players
there are no
moral victories. On the other hand, I was very proud of their spirit and
willingness to compete
after how we played Tuesday night."
Walker scored two of the fourth-ranked Hoyas' four goals on the
afternoon, including the
opening score for Georgetown on an extra-man opportunity. He knotted the score
at one apiece,
answering Navy freshman Ian Dingman's (Deferiet, N.Y.) goal scored at 3:32 in
the first
quarter.
The Hoyas took a 2-1 advantage going into halftime when junior middie
Mike Boynton fired
in a shot past Navy keeper Seth DiNola (Ballston Lake, N.Y.).
At the half, Georgetown held the decisive edge in the statistics,
out-shooting Navy,
16-10, out-ground balling the Mids, 27-10, and winning the battle in the draw
circle, claiming
four of the five face-offs. The one category Navy did lead in, however, was
saves, as DiNola
made a wall between the pipes, warding off six of the Hoyas' shots in the first
stanza.
Navy scored the lone goal of the third quarter, as Navy freshman attack
Jon Birsner
(Levittown, N.Y.) fired a pass from the lower right-hand side of the box to
junior Joe Bossi
(Skaneateles, N.Y.) standing on the opposite corner. Bossi quickly shot the
ball before the
defense could counter and tied the game at 2-2.
After the Navy defense held the Hoyas scoreless for over 29 minutes,
Georgetown struck
with 3:41 to go in the game to take a 3-2 lead. After an errant pass, senior
tri-captain Mike
Hammer scooped up the ball behind the cage and found a streaking Phil Vincenti
up the middle.
Vincenti launched the ball as he was diving towards the goal and gave the Hoyas
the go-ahead
goal.
After a series of turnovers by both teams, Navy took possession of the
ball on the
offensive side of the field. Birsner took the ball behind the cage, looking
for the play to
develop. Without an outlet pass in sight, Birsner used his speed to curl
around the cage and
found an open corner just above Georgetown keeper Rich D'Andrea's left shoulder
to spot the ball
and give Navy life.
Tied up at three apiece, both teams were forced to play their second
overtime game of
the season. Each team had been victorious in its earlier game - Georgetown
defeated
eighth-ranked Duke, 6-5, in overtime a week ago, while Navy claimed a 9-8 win
over ninth-ranked
North Carolina in a four-overtime affair earlier in the season.
It was the Hoyas' day, however, as Walker scooped up a ball off an
errant shot and
threaded it past DiNola to keep Georgetown's unbeaten streak alive at six
games.
The Navy defense did an admirable job, holding the Georgetown "big
three" - attackmen
Neal Goldman, Mike Hammer and Jordan Vettoretti - without a goal. The only
point scored out of
the Hoyas' top-three scorers was the assist by Hammer on Vincenti's goal in the
fourth.
"Coach challenged us to respond especially after Tuesday's game," said
DiNola. "I think
we did that. I felt our defense out-played their offense, but we just couldn't
get it done. I
have to give credit to Georgetown for pulling it through, but I am proud of our
guys today."
"I've been a little critical of our defense as of late, but I really
thought they played
a great game today," said Meade. "Seth was very solid in the cage. He made
some good stops.
Overall, our defense stepped it up."
Navy's three goals marked its lowest goal-scoring output since UMBC
held the Mids to
three in 1999. Meanwhile, the combined seven goals between the Mids and Hoyas
marked the fewest
goals in a Navy game since 1950 when Yale defeated the Mids, 5-1.
The Mids have the week to prepare for seventh-ranked Maryland who is
coming off an 8-7
victory over second-ranked Virginia Saturday. Game time for the Mids and Terps
is 12-Noon
Saturday at Rip Miller Field.
