Mids Claim 12-1 Lax Win Over Marist in Weather-Shortened Battle
ANNAPOLIS, Md. The Navy lacrosse team posted a 12-1 decision over Marist Saturday at
Rip Miller Field in a game that was called after the third quarter because of inclement weather.
The game started nearly an hour late, as Navy's grounds crew and support staff worked to shovel
the snow from the turf for more than three hours. The weather held out for the first-30 minutes
of the game, but wind gusts and snow showers made field conditions too dangerous to continue.
Navy wasted little time in getting rid of the zero on the scoreboard. Sophomore
face-off man Chris Pieczonka (Hamburg, N.Y.) won the opening face-off and quickly dispensed the
ball to junior attackman Ben Bailey (Memphis, Tenn.). With just seven ticks off the clock,
Bailey fired in his first shot and the game's first goal.
Just 30 seconds later, senior midfielders Kelly Nash (Annapolis, Md.) and Greg Conklin
(Syracuse, N.Y.) teamed up, as Conklin gave the Mids a 2-0 lead less than a minute into the
contest.
The Red Foxes answered when attack Josh Ben-Eliyahu scooped up a ground ball in front of
the Navy cage and tossed it past keeper Seth DiNola (Ballston Lake, N.Y.), narrowing the Navy
lead to 2-1.
The Mids went on to score 10-consecutive goals to secure the 12-1 victory, including
five in the second period, while holding Marist scoreless for the final-38 minutes of the game.
Conklin, Joe Bossi (Skaneateles, N.Y.), Graham Gill (Medford, N.J.) and Jon Birsner
(Levittown, N.Y.) produced two goals apiece for Navy, while rookie attack Ian Dingman (Deferiet,
N.Y.) provided a pair of assists.
The Mids return to action next Saturday when they travel to Columbus, Ohio, to face Ohio
State. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
