five goals, the Navy lacrosse team broke a four-game losing streak Tuesday night with a 13-10
victory over 10th-ranked UMBC at Rip Miller Field. Navy, who fell out of the national rankings
this week, was experiencing its longest dry spell since 1997. The Mids, however, unleashed for
a season-high tying 13 goals in the victory over the Retrievers, earning their first ECAC
Lacrosse League win of the season.
"I feel good for our team," said Navy head coach Richie Meade. "It's been a difficult
few weeks, but I'm proud of the team for hanging in there.
"It was a good game tonight. They are a very good offensive team. I felt like we beat
them to the ground balls, scored some transition goals and we did a good job on Muston on
face-offs."
Conklin scored the first of his five goals on Navy's opening possession, as the Mids
scored off the face-off just over a minute into the game. This week's ECAC Co-Offensive Player
of the Week Josh Gerber knotted the game at one apiece when Adam Shiley found Gerber with 10:40
remaining in the first period.
The two teams combined to score eight more goals in the first quarter, including an
unassisted goal by Navy's Joe Bossi (Skaneateles, N.Y.) with two seconds left to give Navy a 6-4
advantage after the first 15 minutes of action.
The second period featured a pair of goals by each team, including an extra-man score at
the 5:41 mark by Gerber who was fed by Brendan Mundorf.
The third period also had the two teams matching goals. Navy sophomore middie Graham
Gill (Medford, N.J.) scored his first-career man-down goal, while it was the Mids' first
man-down goal of the year. With a three-goal lead, Gerber answered with his third goal of the
game, as the third period ended with the Retrievers trailing, 10-8.
Mundorf scored his third goal of the game when he fired in a shot at the 8:58 mark in
the fourth stanza, narrowing the deficit to one for the fifth time in the game.
Navy junior midfielder Ben Bailey (Memphis, Tenn.) padded the Mids' lead when freshman
midfielder Jon Birsner (Levittown, N.Y.) passed the ball from the top right-side of the box to
an open Bailey in front of the cage.
Mundorf seemed invincible as he once again led UMBC back with an unassisted one-on-one
goal at the 5:40 mark to one again put the Retrievers within striking distance at 11-10.
With under two minutes to play in the game, a scrum resulted in Conklin batting the ball
into the goal.
Down by two with 1:37 to play, UMBC was forced to pull keeper Tim Flanagan out of the
goal. With an open net, Conklin fed Bailey to score the final goal of the game and lift the
Mids their first win in 24 days.
Navy won the battle within the face-off circle, claiming 16 of the 26 draws, while the
Mids also produced 11 more ground balls (38-27) than the Retrievers.
Navy returns to action Saturday when it travels to Baltimore to play the top-ranked team
in the country, Johns Hopkins. The Mids will look to snap their 28-game losing streak to the
Blue Jays when the two teams battle at 1 p.m..
