The Game Story:
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's lacrosse team closed out the regular season with a 17-7 victory over Army Sunday in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Ohio State now is 9-5 this season and finished second in the Great Western Lacrosse League with a 4-1 ledger. Army ends its season 6-9 overall (3-3 Patriot League).

"This win was a terrific way to honor our seniors and I couldn't be more proud of our 12 seniors' effort," Joe Breschi, Ohio State head coach, said. "It was a nice was to bounce back after a disappointing game last weekend."

The game was the last home game for the 12 members of the Buckeye senior class - Joe Benson (Baltimore, Md.), Jon Blashford (Carlisle, Pa.), Jeff Buck (Burke, Va.), Jon DeCanio (Clifton, Va.), Ben Drake (Columbus, Ohio), Wes Kemme (Columbus, Ohio), captain Chris Li (Dix Hills, N.Y.), captain Jason Lutz (Carlisle, Pa.), Eric O'Brien (Powell, Ohio), Tim Pataki (Baltimore, Md.), Jon Rydberg (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Jeff Schneider (Dublin, Ohio).

"It was great to come out and play hard today," Li said. "All the underclassmen played hard for the seniors."

Buckeye sophomore Joel Dalgarno (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia/Western Reserve (Ohio) led the team with five goals and six points. Benson had three goals and an assist for four points, while Kevin Buchanan (Jr., Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall) had four points, including three assists. Drake chipped in three points on a goal and two assists. Freshman Mario Ventiquattro (Fr., Carthage, N.Y./Carthage Central) and junior Josh Funk (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) each scored twice. OSU goalie Stefan Schroder (Jr., Kirkville, N.Y./Onodaga C.C./East Syracuse Minoa) had 13 saves in the win.





The Buckeyes took a three-goal lead less than five minutes into the game. Funk opened the scoring with an unassisted score at 13:52, followed by Buchanan's man-up tally, assisted by James Green (Fr., Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East), at 11:32. Dalgarno then found Drake for a score a minute later. Army scored twice in less than a minute to cut the OSU lead to one (3-2), with Brooks Korvin scoring at 4:40 and Kevin LoRusso tallying at 3:55. OSU responded with a Dalgarno goal, set up by Buchanan, just 23 seconds later (3:32) and Ventiquattro closed out the scoring in the first quarter with a goal assisted by DeCanio. OSU led, 5-2, after one quarter.

OSU outscored the Black Knights, 5-1, in the second quarter to go into halftime ahead, 10-3. Dalgarno scored the first two goals of the quarter at 14:15 and 12:36. After Alex Rhoads scored at 10:24 for Army, Benson tallied 21 seconds later on an assist from Chris Friel (Jr., Northfield, N.H./Tilton School). Drake set up Funk at 4:46 and Benson scored a man-up goal with 44 seconds remaining in the half, assisted by Buchanan.

Army scored the first two goals of the second half, as Korvin scored seven seconds into the third quarter and Ryan Chase tallied at 12:33. The Buckeyes responded with a five-goal run, including back-to-back goals by Dalgarno at 10:14 and 5:19. Ventquattro scored at 3:08, assisted by Benson, Buchanan set up Jeff Ryan's (So., Syracuse, N.Y./Hobart/West Genesee) tally at 1:58 and Benson scored with 46 seconds left on the clock. The Buckeyes led 15-5 after three quarters.

Army's Justin Bokmeyer scored the first goal of the fourth quarter at the 9:50 mark. Green tallied for Ohio State at 7:47 and Doug Ruhnke (So., Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) scored at 3:36. Army's Tyler Oates closed out the scoring with a goal with 54 seconds on the clock for the 17-7 final.

The Buckeyes had 42 shots in the game, Army 33. Schroder started in the cage for the Buckeyes and played the first 54:40, making 13 saves and allowing six goals. Freshman Brandon Freeman (Londonderry, N.H./Bridgton Academy) played the final 5:20, making two saves and allowing one goal.

The Buckeyes, who came into the game first in the nation in man-down defense, stopped Army on four chances in the game. Ohio State was 2-for-2 on EMO chances.
