The Game Story:
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team opened its season with an 8-7 loss to No. 11 Navy Saturday in front of 920 fans in Ohio Stadium. The Buckeyes, who trailed by as many as four goals during the game, tied the score as time expired to force overtime. Navy (2-0, 0-0 Patriot), however, got a goal from Michael Beggins with 1:55 left in the first overtime to give the Midshipmen the win.

The Buckeyes remain at home to host Colgate at noon Feb. 24 at North Turf Field.

Buckeye senior Kevin Buchanan, from Cockeysville, Md., led the squad with three goals, including the tally that tied the game at the end of regulation, as he reached the 100-point mark for his career. Junior transfer Peet Poillon, a native of Cranberry Township, Pa., had two goals and an assist for three points in his first game as a Buckeye. Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, native Joel Dalgarno had two goals as he extended his point streak to 28 games and sophomore James Green, a Doylestown, Pa., product, chipped in two assists.

Navy opened the scoring with a man-up goal by Tim Paul just 46 seconds into the game and extended its lead to three on goals by Gregory Clement at 7:52 and Basil Daratsos at 4:45. Buchanan put the Buckeyes on the board at 3:52, assisted by freshman Mike Pires, a native of Saanichton, British Columbia. The Mids led 3-1 after the first quarter.

OSU drew within one (3-2) on Poillon’s first goal as a Buckeye when he tallied at 10:32 of the second. Joe Lennon extended the Mids’ lead to two with a tally at 6:31, sending Navy into halftime with a 4-2 lead.

The Mids scored twice in the first 1:44 of the second half to take a four-goal lead (6-2). Paul scored at 14:07, followed by Nick Mirabito’s man-up score at 13:16. The Buckeyes then went on a four-goal run to tie the game. Dalgarno scored at 10:34, followed by Poillon’s behind-the-back tally at 8:09. Buckeye goalie Stefan Schroder, from Kirkville, N.Y., made four saves in the third quarter, helping the Buckeyes climb out of the four-goal deficit, as Ohio State trailed, 6-4, at the end of the quarter

Poillon found Dalgarno for a man-up score at 7:51 and Buchanan, assisted by Green, tied the game just 33 seconds later (7:18). Navy regained the lead at 4:20 when Clement scored with Navy a man up. After the Buckeyes forced a turnover in their end, the team brought it up-field and took a timeout with 20 seconds remaining. After the timeout, Green set up Buchanan’s game-tying goal, which got past the goalie as time expired. The Buckeyes controlled play for much of the fourth quarter, outshooting the Mids, 10-3.

Navy won the faceoff to begin overtime and held the ball in the Buckeye zone, taking five shots before Beggins found the back of the cage at 1:55.

The Buckeyes were outshot, 28-25, in the game. Schroder had eight saves for the Buckeyes and Navy’s Matt Coughlin had four stops. Three Ohio State shots hit off the post during the game.

Ohio State converted 1-of-2 extra-man chances. Navy was 3-for-4 with the man advantage.

Game Notes
Kevin Buchanan now has 102 points as a Buckeye to tie for 22nd in program history, with 56 goals and 46 assists. His hat trick was the most goals he scored since a four-goal game vs. Bellarmine April 7, 2007. Buchanan is on a 30-game point streak that began with two games remaining in the 2005 season (May 1, 2005 vs. Fairfield). He has 51-41-92 totals during the stretch and has multiple points in each of his last 13 games.

Joel Dalgarno extended his point streak, which began in his first game as a Buckeye, to 28 games (55-38-93).

Freshmen Mike Pires, Bryce Woodson and Scott Lathrop all saw their first collegiate action in the game, with Pires starting the contest and recording an assist. Transfers junior Peet Poillon and sophomores Andrew Stimmel and Conor Anderson also played in their first games for the Scarlet and Gray, with Poillon earning a starting nod.
