loss to Army, and just four days prior to a do-or-die conference game
with Colgate, Bucknell^Òs men^Òs lacrosse team allowed the first seven
goals of the game and dropped a 12-7 decision at Penn State on Tuesday
night at Jeffrey Field.
National scoring leader Chris Cara had three goals for Bucknell (5-7),
but he was held without an assist for the first time in his career. The
junior had a streak of at least one helper in 37 straight games dating
back to the start of his brilliant tenure at Bucknell. He tied the
school^Òs single-season assist record with his 37th in the Army game on
Friday.
John Eremus had three goals for Penn State (5-5), including two during
the Nittany Lions^Ò 7-0 start. Penn State led 5-0 after one quarter, and
it might have been worse had Bison goalie Matt Baran not come up with
seven of his 14 saves in the opening 15 minutes. Greg Hale and Greg
Gurenlian scored seven seconds apart early in the second period to
complete the 7-0 run. John Salvesen finally got the Bison on the board
with 2:52 left in the first half, but the Bison trailied 8-1 at halftime.
Trailing 11-3 after three periods, the Bison offense finally got going in
the fourth when they registered four straight goals. Cara had the first
two, coming just over a minute apart, and Patrick Christensen and Bran
Gargan followed.
Salvesen finished with two goals on the night, while Wes Fetchet had two
assists. Gil Pearsall and Nate Whitaker had two goals apiece for Penn
State.
The Lions held a 43-25 shot advantage, including 24-9 in the first half.
Penn State held a 49-29 ground ball edge and won 11 of 16 faceoffs.
Bucknell also struggled clearing the ball, converting only 18 of 36.
The Bison entered the game ranked No. 2 the nation in man-up efficiency
at 50.8 percent and went 2-for-6 on Tuesday. Cara and Christensen had the
EMO tallies for Bucknell. Penn State was 1-for-5 with a man advantage.
Bucknell wraps up its regular season on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
against Colgate at Graham Field. The Senior Day contest has major
postseason implications. Bucknell currently sits in fifth place in the
Patriot League at 3-3, but only one game behind 4-2 Army and Colgate. A
win over the Raiders on Saturday would put the Bison in the four-team
Patriot League Tournament, while a loss would end the Herd^Òs season.
