seniors Galen Beers (Darlington, Md.) and Billy Fort (Bethesda, Md.) each
scored three goals apiece to lead the No. 13 Cornell men's lacrosse team to
an 11-9 victory over No. 14 Penn State Saturday at Jeffery Field. The win,
which avenges an 8-7 loss to the Nittany Lions last year, improves Cornell
to 4-1 overall. Penn State falls to 3-2.
The final goal by Greenhalgh proved to be an important insurance goal, as
it gave Cornell an 11-7 lead with 10:42 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Penn State defense tightened and closed the gap to 11-9 with goals by
Mike Jacober and Rob Booth. Cornell wouldn't allow the Nittany Lions an
opportunity to get within one goal, and the Big Red left with its first win
over a ranked opponent this season.
The Big Red jumped out of the gates with two quick goals. After J.P. Schalk
(Jamesville, N.Y.) gave Cornell a 1-0 lead, Beers scored the first of three
goals to open the lead to 2-0. With today's game, Beers has scored seven
goals against the Nittany Lions over the last two seasons. After Penn State
tied the score with two late goals, Fort scored his first of three to give
Cornell a 3-2 lead after one quarter. The Big Red would open a 6-3 lead by
halftime, thanks to solid defense and goals by Beers, Fort and Greenhalgh.
Cornell led Penn State in the 2001 matchup, but failed to score in the
second half. The Big Red made sure that wouldn't happen again, as it scored
four times in the third quarter. Besides the three players who scored in
the second quarter, sophomore Ian Rosenberger (Concord, N.H.) tallied late
in the quarter, and Cornell entered the fourth quarter with a 10-6 lead.
Over the last two games, Cornell has outscored its opponents 13-3 in the
third quarter.
A quick goal by Edmond Perry cut the deficit to 10-7, but Greenhalgh gave
Cornell the 11-7 lead with his third and final goal of the game. Despite
missing the Canisius game with a concussion, Greenhalgh has established
himself as one of the better goal-scorers on the team and leads the squad
with 12 scores. He also recorded his first assist of the season on Fort's
second goal of the game.
Cornell will return home to open its Ivy League schedule next weekend
against Yale. The contest will begin at noon, with a women's lacrosse
contest against Pennsylvania following it.
