goals, but it was not enough to lift Penn past visiting-Cornell in the Ivy
League contest at Franklin Field. The Big Red used a three-goal third period
to score the 7-4 League win. Alex Kopicki, Bob Graustein, Sonny Sarker
and Mike Iannacone all scored for the Quakers, who fell to 5-2 overall and
1-2 in the Ivy League.
Trailing 7-3 with less than three minutes left, the Red and Blue made things
interesting as Graustein notched his second goal of the season off a feed
from Will Phillips to draw Penn within three with 2:41 left in the game.
Unfortunately, the Quakers could not strike again, as Cornell netminder
Justin Cynar made five of his nine saves in the final 15 minutes.
Penn received two man-up opportunities in the game's final 2:30 as
Cornell's Josh Heller was whistled for slashing and J.P. Schalk was called
for a delayed substitution. Unfortunately the Quakers could only manage four
shots during the advantages, two by Iannacone.
Cornell opened the game's scoring 7:12 into the contest as Billy Fort scored
on a fluke play. With Red and Blue goalie Ryan Kelly out of the net, a
misplayed pass left Fort with an empty net for an easy goal. Penn responded
quickly however, and knotted the score at one apiece, as Mike Iannacone
deposited a Scott Solow pass behind Cynar, 2:26 later.
Sean Greenhalgh struck for two of his game-high four goals in the final two
minutes of the first period, the first on a Schalk pass with 1:54 left and the second from a Fort feed with
one second to play.
The second period saw both the Penn offense and defense standup, as the Quakers tied the score with
two unanswered goals by Kopicki, his seventh of the season, and Sarkers' fifth of the year, from Solow.
On the defensive end, the Red and Blue held Cornell to just three shots on net, all of which were stopped
easily by Kelly.
The third period was Kelly's turn to shine again, as Cornell peppered him with 10 shots. The junior
netminder out of Deer Park, N.Y. made five saves, but surrendered one to Greenhalgh, who scored while
set up all alone outside the perch.
The Big Red increased on their 4-3 lead in the final period as Andrew Collins and Justin Redd scored
4:20 apart to open up a three-goal Cornell lead. Greenhalgh's fourth goal of the game came with 3:24
remaining and put the Red and Blue in a four-goal hole.
After Graustein's goal, their would be no more late-game heroics however, as Penn lost for the first time
at home this season.
The Red and Blue will get an opportunity to regroup quickly, as they play the fourth game of their current
five-game Ivy stretch at #7 Princeton, in three days. |
