late two-goal deficit as the Red and Blue defeated No. 9 Cornell, 10-8,
at Franklin Field. Will Phillips scored the gamewinning goal with 4:44
remaining and D.J. Andrzejewski netted an insurance goal with 21 seconds
left to give the Quakers their first victory over Cornell in six seasons.
The win also pushed Penn's home winning streak to five games and allowed
them to remain undefeated (5-0) at Franklin Field in 2004.
Phillips scored two goals and added two assists while extending his team
and career-high point streak to 26 games. Zandy Reich and Luke Dixon each
set up three goals, including the final four and Andrzejewski and Mark
Becker each scored a pair of goals for Penn. Ryan Kelly was strong in
net, recording a season-high 13 saves.
Staring at a two-goal deficit (8-6) entering the contest's final minutes,
Becker buried a Dixson pass with 6:13 remaining in the game to spark the
Red and Blue's four-goal run to close out the contest. Less than a minute
after Becker's tally, Mr. Clutch P.J. Gilbert scored yet another big goal
at Franklin Field to tie the contest at 8-8 with 5:10 to go.
If the Franklin Field faithful were in a frenzy after Gilbert's goal,
Phillips' score put them in ecstasy 26 seconds later when he deposited
Dixson's pass into the cage for the lead. Phillips was sitting right
outside the goal crease when Dixson fed him with a perfect pass. Ross
seemed ready for the point-blank challenge, but as it has happened all
season, Phillips' shot found its way into the back of the net.
"Luke gave me a great feed on the crease and I was two feet away and just
had to bury it," Phillips commented on the winning goal. "It's what we've
been doing all year, we've been fighting (our ways back into games).
Cornell's leading scorer Sean Greenhalgh (two goals and an assist) ripped
a pair of wide shots off in the closing minutes before Reich went
end-to-end, taking a loose ground ball and setting up Andrzejewski for
his second of the period, and career-high eighth of the season, with 21
seconds remaining to put the contest away.
"I am really proud of the effort today," Head Coach Brian Voelker said.
"Our guys just kept battling hard all day. We didn't give up."
Penn improved to 5-3 overall and has won three-straight games for the
first time since an 11-day stretch last season (March 11-22). The Red and
Blue, which defeated Cornell at Franklin Field for first time since 1994,
also improved to 2-1 in the Ivy League while the Big Red suffered just
its second defeat of the season, falling to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the
Ivy League.
Also scoring for the Quakers were Alex Salihi (fourth-period goal and
assist), Patrick Rogers (goal) and James Riordan (goal). Cornell's Andrew
Collins, the nation's second-leading scorer was held to just one assist.
Penn returns to action a week from today when it starts the first of a
two-game road trip at Dartmouth on April 10. Opening face-off in Hanover,
N.H. will take place at 1 p.m.
