Andrzejewski, but it was not enough to get Penn past No. 2 Princeton at Franklin Field, as the
Red and Blue dropped a 12-6 decision. The Quakers, who lost for the first time at home in six
games, fall to 4-4 on the season and 1-2 in the Ivy League.
Mark Gannon matched his career-high performance in the cage, turning aside 13 Princeton
shots. Patrick Rogers also turned in a career performance, setting up three goals, including
both of Andrzejewski's tallies. Alex Kopicki scored his team-leading 12th goal, while James
Riordan, Luke Dixson and Chase McGowan also found the back of the net for Penn. Will
Phillips extended his team-leading point streak to 13 games with a helper on McGowan's
fourth goal of the season.
Trailing 7-4 at the half, Penn made a run in the third period, scoring twice to pull within one
goal at 7-6 with 6:17 to play. The Andrzejewski-Rogers duo combined for their second goal
of the game, 3:34 into the third as the Quakers closed within two goals at 7-5. Five minutes
and seven seconds later, Dixson took a feed from Jake Martin, who set up two goals in the
game, and deposited his second goal of the season, and first since opening day at Notre
Dame. The goal pulled Penn within one at 7-6.
While the Red and Blue offense was taking advantages of their opportunities early in the third
period, the defense was keeping the team in the game, as Gannon stopped five Princeton
shots on goal. However, any momentum Penn received from Dixson's goal was quickly
extinguished 12 seconds later, as Jason Doneger scored off a Ryan Boyle feed to re-extend
Princeton's lead to two, 8-6. Boyle, who dished out five helpers, set up Sean Hartofolis 31
seconds after Donger and the Tigers began to pull away. Princeton closed out the game with
three more goals to cap off the final at 12-6.
Penn jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Riordan netted his 11th tally of the season, from
Rogers, 6:08 into the contest. Princeton answered quickly however, as Brad Dumont scored
the first of his two goals to even things out at 1-1 0:39 later. Josh White and Will MacColl
gave Princeton a 3-1 lead less than a minute apart, before Kopicki's 12th of the season
allowed the Quakers to come back within two, at 4-2, with 3:10 to play in the opening period.
Matt Trevenen gave the Tigers their three-goal cushion back just :45 into the second period.
McGowan and Andrzejewski scored :58 apart as Penn once again pulled within striking
distance, down only one, 4-3, with 6:41 to play in the first half. Three-straight goals to close
out the second by Dumont, MacColl and White allowed the Tigers to retake a three-goal lead
heading into halftime.
Penn returns to action at Franklin Field on Sunday, April 6 when it hosts Dartmouth in the
third game of five-straight Ivy League contests. Opening face-off is scheduled for noon. |
