Junior tri-captain DJ Andrzejewski led the Quakers with three goals and one assist, while Luke Dixson and tri-captain Zandy Reich each had a goal and an assist in the game.
Yale got on the scoreboard early and often. The Bulldogs scored three unassisted goals, including the first with a man-up advantage to take a 3-0 lead into the second quarter. Yale's David Schecter scored back-to-back goals to end the first quarter and open the second, and Brian Belsky added another score to push the Bulldogs lead to 5-0 before the Quakers got on the scoreboard. Alan Eberstein found Andrzejewski for Penn's first goal of the game at 9:18, before Schecter netted his fourth goal of the day at 8:30. Andrzejewski answered back with his second goal of the game just over a minute later (6:55) to bring the Quakers within four (6-2), before Yale scored three unanswered goals to head into the locker room with a 9-2 lead.
The teams traded goals to begin the second half, with Andrzejewski feeding Dixson just 1:30 into the third quarter. Yale answered with a goal at 8:21 before David Cornbrooks found the back of the net at 7:23 to cut the Yale lead to six (10-4). Unfortunately, the Bulldogs scored three more times in the third to take what would be an insurmountable lead, 13-4. Penn scored three goals in the fourth, including Tim Hlavin's first collegiate goal, but fell in the end, 15-7.
"Yale played better than we did today - from the opening whistle to the end,"Head Coach Brian Voelker said. "They made their own breaks and we didn't. Our goals in the fourth were good, but they were too little, too late. Yale's goalie also played very well. We had some chances early that we didn't capitalize on and it seemed like we couldn't get it going after that."
Penn and Yale each had 34 shots on goal in the game and the Quakers forced Yale into 20 turnovers on the day.
The Quakers will be at home against Bucknell on Tuesday, March 22. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. start. |
