Princeton to a 12-8 win over Harvard in front of 2,427 fans at the Class of 1952 Stadium.
With his six assists, Boyle joined Kevin Lowe and Jon Hess as the only players in Princeton
history with at least 100 in a career.
Princeton led 10-2 late in the first half in winning its seventh straight game and improving to
7-2 overall and 3-0 in the Ivy League. Harvard slipped to 4-6, 1-3.
Princeton is at Cornell next week (April 19) in a matchup of the only two undefeated teams in
the Ivy League. Cornell remained unbeaten at 4-0 with a 13-5 win over previously unbeaten
Dartmouth Saturday afternoon.
Boyle, the 2002 Ivy League Player of the Year and the leading scorer in Division I this season,
suffered the strained hamstring against Penn on April 1. He missed the Tigers' previous game, a
14-3 win over Quinnipiac, and was expected to miss the Harvard game.
"I felt good enough to practice, so I felt I could play," Boyle said. "George [O'Neil, the athletic
trainer] did a great job working with me. The weather helped too. It was warmer and easier to
get loose."
Boyle wasted no time in his return. He had three assists in the first 5:41 and four in the first
quarter, as the Tigers sprinted to a 5-2 lead after 15 minutes. The lead grew to 10-2 when
Princeton ripped off five more in the first 8:10 of the second quarter.
"That was about as unselfish as we've ever been," said Princeton coach Bill Tierney. "After that,
I thought we got a little selfish. You have to give Harvard a lot of credit. They didn't quit."
Steve Cohen scored an extra-man goal with 12 seconds remaining in the first half to make it
10-3, and Harvard would throw a blanket over Princeton for better than 32 minutes as the
Crimson crept back into the game. It would get as close as three at 10-7 with 10;12 remaining
in the game on Sean Kane's goal off a perfect feed from Mike McBride, but Princeton clamped
down from there. Drew Casino scored twice in the final 4:35 and Kane scored one more as
Princeton won by four to defeat the Crimson for the 13th straight time.
"Ryan was very comfortable," Tierney said. "He came out and got an assist right away, so he
didn't have to press. At first I didn't think we'd play him much, but he felt good."
Sean Hartofilis, the leading goal scorer in Division I, had three for the Tigers, pushing his season total to 30 and his career total to
115, which moved him into fifth place all-time at Princeton. Hartofilis has at least three goals in five of his last seven games.
Josh White had two goals and an assist for Princeton, while Jason Doneger and Owen Daly each had a goal and assist and
defensive specialist Anthony Perna had a goal.
Harvard was led by Doug Logigian's three goals and Kane's two. Matt Primm, Harvard's captain and a high school teammate of
Princeton's Daly, Joe Rosenbaum and Brad Dumont at McDonogh School in Baltimore, had a goal and assist.
Julian Gould made 13 saves for the Tigers.
Harvard outshot Princeton 17-10 in the second half. Alex Vap won 14 of 24 face-offs and had a game-high eight groundballs
for the Crimson. |
