assist and Ryan Boyle had two goals and five assists to lead
Princeton to a 19-10 win over Quinnipiac in the season-opener for
both in front of 2,218 fans at the Class of 1952 Stadium.
Drew Casino added career highs with three goals and four points and
won 16 of 19 face-offs, while five different freshmen also scored.
Princeton reached head coach Bill Tierney's self-imposed 19-goal
limit with 9:07 remaining in the fourth quarter and did not attempt a
shot the rest of the way. It was Princeton's first 19-goal game since
the 2001 season.
"It was a very good start," said Doneger, who scored 41 goals last
year, tied for third in Division I. "We did a lot of good things. I
thought everybody worked well together."
Princeton started its season with an opponent other than Johns
Hopkins for the first time since 1989. The Tigers renew that rivalry
next Saturday at Homewood Field, followed by a trip to Virginia and
then home games against Hofstra and Syracuse.
Boyle and Doneger, the two Princeton co-captains, were two of only
four players on this Princeton team who had ever started a game
before this season. The new-look Tigers, who feature 14 freshmen
after graduating 13 seniors, started three freshmen (attackman Peter
Trombino, midfielder Scott Sowanick, defenseman Zachary Jungers) and
had a lineup filled with players in new roles or new positions.
"We have to be patient," Tierney said. "We have to listen to what
everyone is saying. But it's been a pleasure to be with this group.
It was a great way to start the season."
Princeton trailed 4-2 early in the second after three straight
Quinnipiac goals before erupting for 12 of the next 13 in the game.
Doneger scored five of his goals by intermission, which came with
Princeton ahead 10-5.
The Tigers, who used every healthy player on the roster in the game,
had 11 players score at least one goal. Trombino, Sowanick, Whitney
Hayes, Michael Biles and Mike Gaudio each scored one goal in his
collegiate debut.
The 19th goal came from Ryan Schoenig, who moved from shortstick to
longstick in the off-season.
"It was good to see the young guys get involved," Doneger said. "It's
great for them to get on the scoreboard in their first game."
The Bobcats were led by Mike Stottler, Eddie Morley and Eric Trama,
who scored two goals each.
