key penalty to lead No. 6 Princeton to a 9-7 win over No. 14 Rutgers
in front of 3,414 at the Class of 1952 Stadium in the 81st meeting of
a rivalry that dates to 1888.
Boyle had his goal and two of his assists during a 5-0 Princeton run
that erased a Rutgers halftime lead.
The victory gave Princeton (5-2) the Harland (Tots) Meistrell Cup,
given annually to the winner of the Princeton-Rutgers game, for the
15th straight year. Harland Meistrell is credited with reviving the
sport of lacrosse at both Princeton and Rutgers nearly 90 years ago.
Princeton's defense held Rutgers to 15 shots for the game. The
Scarlet Knights, who had one goal each from seven different players,
were warned for stalling twice in the game.
Princeton hosts Penn Tuesday afternoon (4) to start a stretch of
five-straight Ivy League games to end the regular season. The Tigers
have won nine straight Ivy titles.
"We may have won for the 15th straight year, but Rutgers is getting
better and better," Boyle said. "The last two years have been very
competitive games that could have gone either way."
Princeton led 3-0 in the first quarter before Rutgers shut the Tigers
out for the final 18:02 of the first half. Rutgers (6-3) appeared to
have huge momentum when Tim White (one goal, two assists) scored with
11 seconds remaining in the second quarter to give the Scarlet
Knights a 4-3 lead, but Princeton won the face-off and got the ball
to Boyle, who was dragged down with one second remaining.
The penalty gave Princeton possession and a man-advantage to start
the third quarter, and Boyle made it count when he set up Erik
Kudla's first goal of the year to even the score at 4-4. Kudla's goal
started Princeton on what would become a 5-0 run through the third
quarter and into the fourth quarter as the Tigers built an 8-4 lead.
Boyle would set up Peter Trombino for during the run and then finish
the burst when he scored an unassisted goal 20 seconds into the
fourth quarter. Rutgers would get within two twice in the final 15
minutes but would not get closer.
Boyle's five-point day moved him past Chris Massey into fourth place
all-time in scoring at Princeton with 194 points (56 goals, 138
asssists). Boyle is already second all-time at Princeton in assists
with 138, 36 behind all-time leader Kevin Lowe.
Jason Doneger scored three goals for Princeton, including two in the
first quarter, to give him at least one goal in 23 straight games,
which is exactly halfway to Massey's school record. Doneger also has
had at least three goals in 13 of his last 22 games.
Trombino, the reigning Ivy Rookie of the Week, had a pair of goals
for Princeton and now has at least one in each of his seven games of
his freshman year. He needs three more games to tie Lorne Smith's
school record for consecutive games with at least one goal to start a
freshman season.
Princeton dominated face-offs against Rutgers, winning 12 of 19,
including 8 of 12 by Ryan Schoenig.
