a 15-13 win over Princeton in front of 2,245 at the Class of 1952 Stadium
Saturday afternoon.
The loss ended Princeton's 37-game Ivy League winning streak, a run dating
to the last game of the 1995 season. Princeton's streak ended two games
short of the Ivy record of 39, set by Cornell from 1972-79.
"You have to give Yale credit," said Princeton coach Bill Tierney, who is
61-3 in his last 64 Ivy games. "They played a great game. If teams come out
afraid, they're not going to win. They were never afraid."
Yale never trailed in the game and led by as many as six on two occasions
before Princeton made a furious run, cutting it to one at 12-11 and 13-12.
The Tigers, though, would never get possession down a goal.
"Eric was terrific," said Princeton's B.J. Prager. "I played with him in
high school [Garden City, N.Y.], and I'm happy for him. Now we have to get
some help."
Despite the loss, Princeton (2-4, 0-1) would still be assured of no worse
than a share of the league championship if it won its remaining five league
games. Yale (4-1, 1-1) opened its league season with a loss to Cornell and
now plays Brown in midweek this week.
Yale led 3-2 on Marko Lujic's goal with two seconds remaining in the first
quarter, and the lead grew to 7-3 at intermission. The Bulldogs then scored
the first two goals of the second half to open the lead to six. Princeton
cut it to 11-7 at the end of the third quarter, setting up a wild fourth
quarter that saw the teams combine to score 10 goals.
Princeton lost both face-offs after cutting it to one, and Yale added an
insurance goal on both occasions. The lead grew to 15-12 with three minutes
to go before Prager's third goal cut it to the final margin. Ed Britt led
Yale with two goals and four assists, while Lujic had three goals and four
other Bulldogs had two each. Ryan Boyle had two goals and four assists for
Princeton, while Prager and Sean Hartofilis had three each.
Princeton's streak began in 1995 after a loss to Cornell. During the
streak, Princeton won 20 games by at least 10 goals and outscored its
opponents 538-206 for an average of 14.5-5.6.
Of the 37 games, only seven were decided by three or fewer goals and only
two by two or fewer. Princeton defeated Penn 9-87 in 1999 and Brown 9-7 in
1998 in the closest games.
Yale's 15 goals were the most Princeton has allowed to any opponent besides
Syracuse since Johns Hopkins scored 15 in the first game of the 1995
season. Princeton had not allowed any Ivy team more than 10 goals in a game
since Yale scored 18 in the 1990 NCAA tournament.
