Peter Trombino tied his career high with six points on three goals and three assists and Scott Sowanick and Tommy Davis had three goals each to lead sixth-ranked Princeton to a 12-8 win over Yale in front of 2,176 at Class of 1952 Stadium Saturday afternoon. The game marked the 29th straight year that Princeton has opened its Ivy League schedule against the Bulldogs.
Princeton improved to 5-2 with its third straight win, while Yale slipped to 3-5 overall, 0-3 in the league. Princeton is at Syracuse Saturday.
The win came 52 weeks after Yale knocked off Princeton in New Haven. Just as in 2003, the last time Princeton played Yale after losing the year before, the Tigers did not forget.
"We remembered what happened last year," Trombino said. "We were very focused. We had a good game plan and a very good week of practice, and we came out very strong."
Yale defeated Princeton 15-13 in 2002 at Class of 1952 Stadium to end Princeton's 37-game Ivy winning streak two games short of the league record. The following year in New Haven, Princeton defeated the Bulldogs 15-5.
In the 2006 game, the score was 4-0 before Yale's first goal in the second quarter and 7-1 at intermission. The biggest lead was at 12-5 in the fourth before Yale scored the final three.
"We were worried about possession," Princeton coach Bill Tierney said. "We never had the ball up there last year. We tried a bunch of different things. We weren't as concerned with winning or losing the face-off as stopping the fast break or trying to force a turnover. I think we were successful."
Yale's Dan Kallaugher won 17 of 24 face-offs and had nine ground balls, but it was actually an improvement for the Tigers, who won just 3 of 20 face-offs a year ago and did not win a face-off in the final three quarters. This time, Princeton used four different face-off men, including longstick Chris Peyser, to slow Yale's transition and put pressure on the ball.
Davis scored all three of his goals in the first quarter, and the freshman now has nine on the year. Trombino now has 10 goals and 10 assists on the year, giving him double figures in goals and assists in each of his first three seasons.
Sowanick scored three goals and added an assist, giving him eight goals and six assists in three games since moving to attack.
Yale freshman Michael Karwoski, a graduate of the same St. Anthony's High School aas Trombino, scored three times for the Bulldogs. George Carafides, who stopped Trombino's last chance shot a year ago to preserve the Yale win, made 15 saves this time.
Princeton's Alex Hewit made 12 saves.
Princeton outshot Yale 49-36, including 40-18 in the first three quarters.
