The tally came with 2:02 remaining in overtime, as he flipped a ground ball, with his back to the goal, into the corner of the net. The goal gave the Stags a 7-6 season opening victory over host Providence College.
In a tight fought contest, neither team was able to open a lead larger then two goals, the margin Fairfield held, 3-1, early in the first quarter. Providence would tally three unanswered goals to end the half, and lead 4-3 at intermission.
Travis Nelson evened the score once again at the 3:49 mark of the third quarter, netting his second of the game. Just 30 seconds later Brendan Finnerty would tally his second of the game, unassisted, to put Fairfield ahead 5-4. Devin McBride knotted the score 92 seconds into the fourth quarter, and Colin Reposa put the Friars ahead with 7:14 to play, 6-5.
Dan Boudreau provided the Stags first game-saving play of the final minute of play, taking a pass from Brian Stanton and putting it home with 51 seconds to play. The second game-saver came from the Stags bench when McBride had appeared to score the go-ahead goal for the Friars with 27 seconds to play. The Fairfield coaching staff asked for a stick check and when he was penalized for an illegal stick, the goal was disallowed.
Providence received the ball with a free clear to start overtime, after a Stags penalty to end regulation. Fairfield's defense forced a failure to advance call against the Friars on that first possession of overtime, setting up the game-winning goal.
Kuring finished the game with three points, netting his goal, and assisting on both of Nelson's goals. Nelson and Finnerty each had two goals, while Boudreau added one and Stanton had an assist.
The Stags are now 1-0, while the Friars fall to 0-1.
Joe Marra picked up his first win for the Stags with a five-save effort.
The Stags cleared the ball well, going 16-18, while on the flip side, held Providence to 14-24. As a team the Stags won 9-15 face-offs, with Sean Fay picking up eight wins. Neither team scored in man-up situations, Fairfield going 0-4 and Providence 0-3.
The Stags have now won their season opening game in nine seven straight seasons and are 9-7 all-time.
Fairfield begins the home portion of its schedule on Saturday, March 1, hosting Dartmouth on Alumni Field at 1 p.m. |
