The Game Story:
HAMDEN, Conn. – Sophomore Garret Kerr (Inglewood, Ontario) scored a team-high four goals, including the game-winner, as the Quinnipiac men’s lacrosse team cruised past Wagner, 14-4, in the season-opener for both teams, Saturday afternoon at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey/Lacrosse Field. A.J. Alessi (Branford, Conn.) and Bill Hayes (Merrimac, Mass.) also scored multiple goals with three and two, respectively.

Gary Messina (West Islip, N.Y.), Mike Lamagna (Andover, Mass.), Sean Endicott (Malden, Mass.), Ted Dimond (Marblehead, Mass.) and Matt Minor (South Hadley, Mass.) also scored for Quinnipiac. Messina added two assists while Anthony Poerio (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) and Todd Kaiser (Summit, N.J.) also added helpers.

Kevin Benzing (Severna Park, Md.) needed to make just one save to secure the victory in net for the Bobcats. The Seahawks slipped three goals past Benzing before Ryan Andrews (Smithtown, N.Y.) saw the final 5:50 of game action. All four Wagner goals were scored with a man advantage.

Quinnipiac took a 4-0 lead by the 14:25 mark of the second quarter on goals by Dimond, Endicott, Alessi, and Hayes. After a Will Macumber goal for Wagner made it 4-1, Kerr scored the final difference-maker with one second left in the second quarter.

Quinnipiac scored all three goals of the third quarter, including a pair created by Messina, to take a commanding, 8-1 lead, before things got chippy in the fourth. A combined 13 penalties were called on the two teams, including 10 on Quinnipiac. Wagner capitalized on the Quinnipiac penalties early in the period, scoring twice in the first four minutes to close the deficit to 8-3.

The Bobcats responded with six straight goals before Macumber’s second goal at 2:56 of the fourth period accounted for the final score.

Quinnipiac returns to action Saturday, Feb. 23, when they play host to St. John’s. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey/Lacrosse Field.
