The Game Story:
HAMDEN, Conn. – Garret Kerr (Inglewood, Ontario) scored the game-winning goal as time expired to give the Quinnipiac men’s lacrosse team an 11-10 victory against St. John’s, Monday afternoon at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey/Lacrosse Field. Kerr scored three goals on the afternoon to lead the Bobcats.

With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 2-0, while St. John’s drops to 0-2. Ted Dimond (Marblehead, Mass.) and Anthony Poerio (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) also chipped in with two goals apiece. Zach Dendas (Branford, Conn.), Bill Hayes (Merrimac, Mass.), Todd Kaiser (Summit, N.J.) and Kevin Kelly each contributed one goal. Poerio and Kaiser had two assists each.

Trevor Michaelsen led St. John’s with four goals, while Justin O’Donnell and Graeme Gillespie had two apiece. Joe Bagnasco had three assists.

The game-winning goal came with the Bobcats streaking downfield. A series of passes, the last coming from Kaiser, found Kerr on the right side. Kerr then released a shot with 0.7 seconds remaining on the clock that beat St. John’s goaltender, Gavin Buckley.

The game went back and forth throughout. Only twice in the first three periods did either team lead by as many as two goals. Poerio’s goal with three seconds left in the third gave the Bobcats an 8-6 lead, before the advantage stretched to 9-6 with 9:41 left in the game. The Red Storm then scored four consecutive goals, the final marker coming with 2:23 remaining, to retake the lead at 10-9.

But the Bobcats scored twice in the final minute to grapple victory away from the Red Storm. Poerio scored unassisted with 56 seconds left before Kerr’s game-winner as time expired.

Kevin Benzing (Severna Park, Md.) moves to 2-0, making four saves in the victory. Buckley made 11 saves in defeat.

The Bobcats return to action Saturday, when they travel to Riverdale, N.Y. to take on Manhattan. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
