two goals and an assist and fellow freshman Chris Doctor (Skaneateles,
NY) added a goal and three assists as No. 6/8 Rutgers opened a 4-1 lead
on Delaware and cruised to a 12-4 victory on Saturday at the Rutgers
Stadium Complex.
Tim White (Rockville Center, NY) opened the scoring with 13:33 remaining
in the first period when he scored off a feed from Doctor. Rutgers added
another tally less then a minute later when Michael Coomber (Ridgewood,
NJ) netted an unassisted goal. Delaware closed the gap to 2-1 with 11:20
remaining in the first period, but the Scarlet Knights responded with an
extra-man goal from Checcio and tally from Brett Mooney (Springfield, PA)
to close out the first quarter.
RU extended its lead to 5-1 on a man-up goal from Checcio with 10:53 to
play in the second quarter. Delaware scored one minute later when Matt
Alrich found the back of the net, but it was the final goal UD would
score until the 2:00 mark of the fourth quarter. Rutgers ended the
quarter with goals from Jamie Lovejoy (Holbrook, NY) and John Flanagan
(Smithtown, NY) to take a 7-2 lead at halftime.
Josh Ashcraft (Carthage, NY) scored two minutes into the third quarter,
and White added his second goal of the day with 3:11 remaining in the
quarter. The Scarlet Knights received fourth-quarter goals from Matt
Apel (Bridgewater, NJ), Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY) and Doctor.
Checcio and White both scored two goals for RU, while Delby Powless
(Hagersville, Ontario) had two assists. The win was the 150th in the
15-year head coaching career of RU's Jim Stagnitta, who is in his third
season at Rutgers. Stagnitta now owns a 150-59 (.718) career record
In goal, sophomore Gregory Havalchak (Corning, NY) made 14 saves, while
senior Chris Kenyon (Westport, CT) relieved Havalchak late in the fourth
quarter. Rutgers outshot Delaware 30-26.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Wednesday, March 10, when it
travels to Philadelphia, PA, to face Saint Joseph's. Face-off is at 7:00
p.m.
