The Game Story:
CHICOPEE, MA – The No. 7 Rutgers University men’s soccer team fell, 4-3, to Massachusetts Sunday evening at Szot Park in its final tune-up before the regular season opener Friday against the top ranked Hoosiers. Massachusetts junior Jeff Deren broke a 3-3 tie with less than six minutes remaining, netting his third goal of the match to capture the win. Scarlet Knight freshman Steve Loverso (Warwick, NY) registered what would have been the tying score, but the goal was ruled after the final whistle, giving Massachusetts the victory.

The Minutemen opened the scoring when Deren notched his first of three goals in the match. Sophomore back Rory Fitzgerald (Middletown, NJ) answered, netting his first goal of the preseason for the Scarlet Knights. Fitzgerald connected off a pass from sophomore Anthony Schiavino (North Hunterdon, NJ) to even the score in the 38th minute.

Just before halftime, Deren scored his second goal off a feed from Ptah Myers to give the Minutemen a 2-1 lead into the half. Massachusetts forward Yuri Morales opened up a two goal lead, scoring in the 49th minute.

Junior midfielder Josh Gros (Mechanicsburg, PA) brought the Knights within a goal, recording his second goal of the preseason for Rutgers. Gros scored off a penalty kick in the 75th minute.

Rutgers evened the score for the second time in the contest as junior forward Sherif El Bialy (Cairo, Egypt) netted his second goal of the preseason for the Knights, connecting on a free kick at the 79:11 mark to tie the match at three goals a piece.

Deren scored in the 85th minute off a pass from Derek Rhodes to lift Massachusetts to the 4-3 victory.

Senior goalkeeper Ricky Zinter (Penfield, NY) started the contest, notching three saves for the Scarlet Knights. Junior keeper Scott Conway (Aston, PA) played the entire second period between the posts, recording one save. Massachusetts goalkeeper Colin Burns collected six saves in the game, while Enzo Altomare recorded two.

The Scarlet Knights, playing without the services of senior tri-captains Guy Abrahamson (Livingston, NJ), David Boutilier (Sparta, NJ), Todd Moser (Fanwood, NJ) and sophomore Gustavo Mora (Asuncion, Paraguay) due to injury, managed 23 shots to Massachusetts’ 13.

Rutgers will open its regular season Friday, Aug. 30, when they travel to Bloomington, IN to face No. 1 Indiana at 7:30 p.m. in the adidas/Indiana Tournament. As part of the weekend tournament, the Scarlet Knights will also play Butler on Saturday, Aug. 31 at 5:30 p.m.
