| | | | Current Record : (2-4) | Current Record : (5-1) | | | | Team Page For 2005 | Team Page For 2005 | | | | | | The Game Story: | GENEVA, NY – Freshman attacker Nate Sanderson (Orangeville, Ontario) continued his recent scoring streak with a career-high four goals, but the 16th-ranked Rutgers men’s lacrosse team lost a 16-10 decision No. 14 Hobart on Saturday afternoon before 1,694 at McCooey Field.
Aside from Sanderson’s four goals, the Scarlet Knights also received four assists from senior Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY) and a pair of goals by Sean Battoni (Ringoes, NJ). John Flanagan (Smithtown, NY) and Jamie Lovejoy (Holbrook, NY) each had a goal and an assist. Junior Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) made 11 saves while facing a season-high 44 shots.
Hobart, which came into the contest averaging nearly 11 goals per game, opened the scoring less than two minutes into regulation, but Battoni quickly tied it 50 seconds later (13:06) before the Statesmen scored again to go ahead 2-1 at the 11:43 mark of the first quarter. Back to back goals from Flanagan and Matt Gaines (Abingdon, MD) gave the Scarlet Knights their only lead of the day at 3-2 midway though the first quarter.
Hobart scored the final three goals of the first quarter to take a 5-3, but Rutgers answered by converting a man-up opportunity on Sanderson’s first tally of the game to open the scoring in the second quarter. The Statemen went ahead 8-5 late in the second quarter by scoring three of the game’s next four goals and eventually grabbed a 10-7 lead at halftime. Sophomore Chris Doctor

Hobart put the game away by scoring four straight goals from the opening stages of the third quarter to the 11:13 mark of the fourth quarter. Sanderson had two of Rutgers’ three fourth quarter goals and Lovejoy added a score with 9:47 to play. The Statesmen’s Nate Molinari had a game-high seven points (two goals, five assists) while Nate Hill added four goals and two assists.
Hobart outshot Rutgers 44-32 and won 16-of-27 face-offs. The Scarlet Knights were called for just two penalities, successfully killing off each of Hobart's man-up oppertunities. Today’s game marked the end of a busy 11-day stretch for the Scarlet Knights that included games against four ranked opponents – No. 12 Towson, No. 6 Army, No. 18 Stony Brook and No. 14 Hobart.
Rutgers returns to action on Wednesday, March 30, when it continues its ECAC schedule against conference-newcomer St. John’s at 3:00 p.m. in Jamaica, NY. |
