8-1 in the second half en route to a 12-5 victory. The game was tied 4-4 at halftime, but Rutgers came out strong in the second half,
out-shooting the Jaspers 27-7 after intermission. The game also marks the first win at Rutgers for head coach Jim Stagnitta, who is in his first
season at the helm of the Scarlet Knights.
The Jaspers stuck with the Scarlet Knights in the first half, trailing just 2-1 after the first quarter, and tying the game at 4-4 at halftime. The Scarlet
Knights were led in the first half by sophomore Tim White (Rockville Center, NY), who netted two goals and finished with a career-high four
scores.
Rutgers was able to pull away in the second half, scoring three consecutive goals early in the third quarter. Two of the goals came from White and
the other by freshman Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY). Eugene Tanner then scored for the Jaspers, but Rutgers responded by recording the
final five goals of the game, including two by Blomquist, who finished the game with a career-high four goals. Freshman Jamie Lovejoy
(Holbrook, NY) followed his three assist performance against Towson in the first game of the season, with his first collegiate goal and three more
assists against Manhattan. RU captain Tim Horgan (Buchanan, NY) scored his first goal of his senior season, while adding an assist, while
sophomore Mike Coomber (Ridgewood, NJ) earned his first score of the season.
"I wish we could have played the whole game like we played in the second half," said Stagnitta. "We have to learn how to come out and play with
that kind of intensity for the whole game."
The Scarlet Knights will return to action with a home contest against Delaware on Sat., March 2. The game is set for a 3:30 start. |
