(Hagerville, Ontario) scored seven goals and junior attacker Leif
Blomquist (Long Beach, NY) added three scores as fourth-ranked Rutgers
(4-0) erupted for 15 first-half goals en-route to a 17-4 victory over
Quinnipiac (1-2) on Saturday at the Rutgers Stadium Complex.
The 17 goals is the most scored in the three-year tenure of head coach
Jim Stagnitta and is the Scarlet Knights' largest margin of victory since
a 19-2 win over Albany on April 7, 2001. Powless' seven goals is the
fourth highest total in single-game school history, tied with seven other
players. Last season at Navy, he netted seven scores in a 13-8 victory.
Rutgers started its offensive onslaught two minutes into the game, as Tim
White (Rockville Center, NY) scored off a feed from Josh Ashcraft
(Carthage, NY) with 12:59 to play in the first quarter. Rutgers won the
ensuing face-off, and Powless scored his first goal two seconds later,
taking a pass from Blomquist. Thirty-one seconds later, Devon Britts
(Scottsville, VA) made the score 3-0 on his first goal of the season.
The Scarlet Knights added four more goals in the first quarter, two by
Blomquist, to take a 7-1 lead at the end of the period. Blomquist also
finished with two assists.
Powless began the scoring in the second quarter off a pass from White at
the 13:45 mark, and Rutgers added two goals from Brett Mooney
(Springfield, PA), three more from Powless, and one from Blomquist and
White to take a commanding 15-2 lead at halftime.
Aside from Powless and Blomquist, Rutgers also received offensive
contributions from Chris Doctor (Skaneateles, NY) (four assists), White
(two goals, three assists), Mooney (two goals), Ashcraft (one goal, one
assist) and Matt Apel (Bridgewater, NJ) (two assists). Britts, Ashcraft
and Colin Checcio (Wayne, PA) each scored one goal. Rutgers outshot
Qunnipiac 41-15 and won 17-of-24 (.708) face-offs.
Sophomore goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) made six saves and lowered
his goals-against average to 4.83. Senior Chris Kenyon (Westport, CT)
relieved Havalchak in the fourth period.
For Qunnipiac, Josh Murray and Mike Stottler each scored two goals.
The Scarlet Knights return to action next Saturday, March 20, when they
travel to West Point, NY, to face Army. Face-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
